Just spotted this one, which may be of interest to Dublin based riders. No idea what the distance is. And does anyone know what the Khyber circuit is?

Being looking forward to the return of the park races, missed them last year, not sure of the route thou, i know the Kyber itself but the assigned circuit I am not sure bout.

Where's the Khyber? I've heard its a big drag there, but I'm not sure what road it is.

And are the Park races set to be a regular thing? Very handy if so.

The Khyber pass is the MUP on the hill down from the Popes cross to the Magazine fort.
Right hand circuit so descending the Khyber.

There's only one park date in the calender but if this is a success there will almost certainly be more.

Its when you enter the park from the main gates, go straight up the main rd, come to 1st roundabout, take the 1st exit, go down that hill and that the nxt right is the Kyber.

My guess it will go left and the top and left again at the hospital and back towards the Kyber, since they say sign on is popes cross, and i dont think they can close the main road if they turned right at the top of the kyber.

there are trying to get them into a regular event like they use to be, but goin by the CI calender the next one is not till 23rd June, so its all not clear at the moment

Thanks Iseran. Will have to work on my pack skills so. The downhill start in Stamullen this weekend really caught me out.

    ... how many laps?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 Iseran

The usual would be an hour plus a number of laps- probably three full laps after the hour is completed- but I don't know that for a fact.

That's the same route they use for the cycle in the Dublin Duathlon Series.

It's a fast descent down the Kyber Road, followed by a hard right onto Military Road, and straight into a steep hill up to the Magazine Fort. This is the steepest bit on the course, but probably only 400m or so to the top. Slightly rolling road between the "hairpins" on Miltary Road, slight downhill for the last bit. Then a hard right onto Acres Road and into another short sharp hill. Then a slightly uphill drag to finish the loop. It's a nice, bumpy course.

Note for the duathlons, for the section of Acres Road between Military Road and turn-off for the hospital, only one half the road was closed. Made the turn a off Military Road quite a bit tighter, could be tricky in a bunch.

There's a video of the course here:

And some more info on the route here:

Do they remove the bollards? They're ok when you're on your own, but if there is a bunch approaching that could be a bit hazardous.

The did for the duathlon, the ones top and bottom of the Kyber Road and the ones in the middle of Military Road.

There would be carnage if they left them in place for a cycle race

Great, yea it looks like a good few Tuesdays in the Park !! great races, very fast, always comes together, and always a gallop.
It's nearly always 1hr +plus 2 laps .... Bell will ring when you enter the last lap !!

    Biker jOe

I don't understand the 1hr + laps thing ... do they count how many lap you do /hr and make you do 2 extra lap at the end? So it's the most laps who wins? ( sorry for the silly questions )

Nope, you go round and round for an hour, it doesn't matter how many laps are done, and when it reached 60mins, you have 2 more to go

So you can use the hour as a warm up, have a chat with your team mates and do a little as you want, be the first in position when the bells rings and go for it in the last 2 laps?

    meh

Might give this one a lash. I can pick up a one day license at the sign-on, right? Only have a CI membership for club competition

Yes, but make sure to bring your membership card with you. A one day license should cost a tenner and there will probalby be a race entry fee too. You'll probably also have to pay a deposit for your number, which will be returned at the end. Bring a few safety pins as well for the number just in case they run out of them.

You can and keep the receipt 'cos you can use them as part payment of a full racing license if you want to take one out.

If only. I'm expecting to be suffering from the gun.

I only discovered that at the weekend. I was told a certain number of receipts would allow you to switch your license to S3. Don't know how you go about doing it, whether you can do it through the club or just go direct to Cycling Ireland.

If you already have a club license you can do it direct through the CI office
(PS great photo, love that hair)

    Nice one, thanks.

Yeah, the ladies love the hair.

EDIT: I see the difference between a club competition and full compeition license is €65. So once you get near six open races a year it is wise to upgrade it.

Might do this one, did the circuit last year in the last Duathlon and the corner at the bottom of Khyber will be terrifying in a bunch. It is followed by a sharp uphill.

Out of interest what does one do if one loses one's CI membership card. I might be thinking it worthwhile to upgrade from club competition to S3 myself.

I mentioned this to El Tonto on the Orwell spin today but I'll throw it up here for anyone else doing this race.

Cycled down the Kyber Road this morning and there's section of the road near the bottom, just at the car park, where the left side of the road is in ribbons. Some very large/deep potholes that you don't want to hit at any speed.

They may send someone out with a bucket of tarmac before Tuesday, but it's probably worth checking it out yourself on the way to sign in. Or else just keep right on the way down.

Was there last Saturday, that road around the car parking places is always in ribbons for as long as i can remember.
