    Gentlemen

I need a fan belt (not yet urgent, thankfully) size 9.5 x 630. VW says "discontinued" and the local motor factor says "no can do and no can order either".

Anyone know of a fan belt specialist?

Suggest you take a stroll into Halfords. You should be able to pick out what you need from their belt stock....

I have in the back of my head that 9.5*630 is used on a Range Rover Classic....but it could be another LR product too.

    What vehicle exactly is it?

    Gates do a 6205MC / AVX10 x 625La for a VW. This crosses over to:

    AD 10A0625
    Bosch 1 987 947 628, 910416-1125
    Contitech 6578002, 6587751, AV10-625, AV10-630, V515
    Dayco (Pirelli) 10245, 10A0625C, 11A0635C, 569S, 578SD, 587, 6667, 6667D, VS625
    Goodyear 10AV0625, 1534, 1735H, 950625
    Lucas KDB625
    Motorcraft EJA62, EJA63, EJE243, EJK245
    Optibelt 1125
    Quinton Hazell QBA625
    Rofan 1A0625, 555
    Unipart GCB10625

10mm wide and approximately 630mm. 5mm or so either side isn't going to make a difference. ;)

Give the local motor factor a slap. Fanbelts are the easiest things to get.

Try a farmer's co-op, or tractor spares specialist, or plant specialist (not, not Rhodedendrons.........JCB's ! ), or one of those bearing suppliers.

I'd be shocked if they can't help - esp the plant guys.

It's my VW T3 diesel van. The setup in it is a bit strange in that it has two alternators (army spec, for the radio equipment). So it has two fanbelts, a really long one that drives the two alternators (that one I got no problem) and a really short one for the water pump. The one for the water pump is awkward to get to, so I'd rather get the correct size and not experiment with alternatives.

5mm in difference is not a problem. You'll have more than that in adjustment available.

    Not in my case :D

The way it is adjusted is that the pulleys split in half and you put in/take out shims ...a right hoor of a job as it is difficult to get to. Starting off with the correct size belt cuts down immensly on the amount of swear words needed to finish the job.:D

With the correct size belt I "just "need to open the pulley that I can just about get at, change belts and put it together again. Different size belt would mean adjusting both pulleys and to get at the other one the exhaust would have to come off as well to have any chance at all of getting to the allen screws that hold the pulley together.

that's the little bastard ...and there's two of them

Dont know where you are Peasant but between Thomastown and Bennettsbridge in Kilkenny there is a guy by the name of Bookle who has a large supply of belts and can sell them by lenght. He specialises in oil so he may be in the Golden pages.

Fair point, but if you did the job now, you'd have an easier future finding 625 belts ;)

Besides, shouldn't a new belt be correctly adjusted anyway? I think if you went into Hellfrauds and measured one of their 625 belts, it wouldn't even be exactly 625mm long either. Tolerance ;)

Even if you had the correct length it'd stretch after a while on the motor and need to be re-tensioned. I'm afraid it's get-your-hands dirty time. If the exhaust on a T3 is involved it's also get-your-hands-cut, knuckes barked and studs sheared time.

    all correct

but with the correct size belt I should get away with adjusting one pulley only

(no busted knuckles, no flow of blood, no exhaust bits being kicked down the road in frustration :D)
