College Project guitar

    Hey guys,

Doing a project in college on anthopo-zoo-morphisim. Basicly products that look like animals, plants or things. I get to use this as an official college project of making a guitar so Im thinking at the moment to go with a dragon style guitar with a carved headstock and possibly either a dragonburst finish or some sort of fabric finish to resemble a more traditioinal cinese dragon.

Im not going to have to long to actually build it so Im hoping I can use the CNCs in college to do most of my work using some 3d models I do up. Wont have too long to ship in the parts I need as Ill probably only have a week or so to actually make it from the time the design is finalised. Ill be stealing all the electonics from various old project leftovers I have and was thinking I could use the truss rod out of a snapped acoustic neck I have.

Long story short, anyone know where I might be able to get my hands on a reasonably priced fretboard in a hurry, prefereably prefretted or slotted and radiused. EDOT: Forgot to mention was looking at a gibson scale rather then fender.

Also will need to get my hands on some wood, if I cant find some decent priced woods for this project I might end up using some old MDF and put a veneer on it, I know that it will sound pants but my lecturer isnt after sound this time as it is only a protype, I know that I would probably use mahogany with a quilted maple top. Going to need a blank bigger then say a Les Paul or PRS for the body and a neck blank that has room for a dragon head headstock.

I was planning on ordering the hardware I need of axesrus, they have some inexpensive gold hardware that would suite.

Oh and of course, pictures will be supplied. Its mandatory for all boards projects I know.

Don't have a neck for you unless you want an old Aria bass neck but it sounds like an interesting project. Good luck with it.

I can't see MDF putting up with the pressures the strings will exert on it.

Thanks for the offer Doc. I do have a neck lying around waiting to go onto a washburn thats being refinished but since I plan on carving a dragon headstock I think I will need to start with a pland neck, just a premade fretboard would save ALOT of time. Thanks again for the offer.

Its times like this I wish I was in america, all the shops I know of that do fretboards are over there and that gives me two problems shiping time and cost. Even ebay sellers charge more for the shipping to Ireland then they do for the fretboard itself.

Any body know any shops closer to home? That would be a great help. Thanks

Also Ned, was a little worried myself about that but at about 2" thick it should do the job. Might see if I can find an old solid door or something on adverts free section or jumbletown.

Seriously, no matter how thick the MDF is, it won't work. MDF is just little bits of scrap wood glued together, and if you put screws down into it to hold a bridge in place, once the strings are tightened to tension, those screws will have nothing of substance to hold them in, so either they'll shred out, or the MDF will snap.

Broken les paul on adverts may be part of my answer. Will try and have a look in the wood suppliers. Cant really afford to spend too much on it atm, hence the mdf I already have that lying round..
