English vs English Literature

    Hi,

I'm (hopefully) heading to Trinity next year but have yet to actually pick a course:eek:, I've been thinking about it all year but I'm generally uninterested in almost any course you can name:o

Long story short - I've always loved English in secondary school and it's always been my strongest subject. I couldn't get a clear enough idea from the tcd website and unfortunately don't know anyone doing either of these courses - so if anyone can throw some pearls of wisdom my way on what these two courses specifically involve and the differences between them I'd be very grateful:D

I know obviously that literature is a TSM and would naturally involve more reading but that's it thus far! A less significant feature of course - but what hours would one be looking at in each course?

I've no real experience with the english department here, but I will say that you should choose the course before the college! It's far more important you're doing something you like than if you're in a nice college. Naturally travel / accommodation arrangements can be prohibitive, but yeah, figure out what you really want to do and you're sorted.

There was a thread about English back here which might answer some of your questions - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055464004

But, honestly, there's no point in doing it just because it's 'the least uninteresting' course that Trinity offers -

'English Literature' is just half of what they describe as 'English Studies', it's not a separate course. Plenty of reading whatever way you look at it. :)

Yep, English Studies has the same reading as the TSM course, plus more.

If you did it as TSM, it depends on what you did it with for the hours. Probably six hours of English. Single honours would be about... 12-14 hours a week classes? I think. English Studies just has more modules and I think it's supposed to have more of a focus on the actual language in the sense of studying Old English and stuff like that.
