Dog S**t

Just back from my regular 8 mile run around the mahon amenity walk in Cork (the railway line and around by the tunnel). Some other path user has finally lost the plot with dog users who use the path as a toilet (for their dogs).

They have spray painted the words 'Dog Owners S**t' on the path and spray painted the dog waste specific bins white.

It's the only part of running I don't like - enforced proprioception.

lol, Anyone who saw me on Saturday morning in Cobh would have wondered if I was still drunk from the night before. I had to pick up a parcl from the post office so decided to run down. I was doing a strange lepricaun hop skip and jump type to avoid all the dog poo. Wasn't me with a spray can in Mahon though :)

As a relatively new Irish resident it is really obvious that this behaviour is considered socially acceptable in Ireland. No one seems to find it an issue, apart from us runners maybe. In the Channel Islands (admittedly a very straight-laced and righteous part of the world) the practice of not clearing up after your dog has almost disappeared - and those that continue their old ways are condemned. (Not to death exactly but you know what I mean).

But here in Dublin you're right RJC/HM, it's more like a steeplechase at times along the canal banks in particular :)

It's a pity that a nice amenity like that is being abused, a lot of the ditches are strewn with beer cans as well.

The park on the Carrigrohane road has the same dog sh*t problem though, lots and lots of dogs and sh*t everywhere in the grass, it's ridiculous. I run there a lot and I don't think I have ever seen anyone clean up after their dog, it's disgusting! One thing I have noticed is that there are no bins there though, it won't solve the problem but it may help.

I'd be equally disturbed by the spray painting!

The dog sh*t isn't my biggest gripe about Mahon (and elsewhere), it's the groups of people who insist on walking four abreast and not moving in to let you past!!!

I often worry about this. A lot of kids play in the grass there during the summer. It's a no hassle place for parents to bring kids for a picnic and a bit of a run around but with the amount of poo there it's only a matter of time before some poor kid is effected by that worm/parasite thing

The council should put up some signs there to remind people about it. I've seen some parks where they have decent signage, dog poo bins and free dog poo bags.

That's the point about dog sh*t, it is full of all the parasites and viruses and people think that just because it's on the grass it's ok.

If they ever come up with a chewing gum tax I'm going to mount a campaign for a dog food tax. The principle is the same - horrible and unsightly when discarded on the street. The only difference is that one has fallen out the ass of a dog.
