i went to malta last October as I got cheap ryanair flights. Its a bit of a long flight on scabby ryanair seats but when you're getting there for half nothing you make do!

Stayed in Meridien in St Julian's. The hotel was a nice four star and its located on the seafront. Its a good 20 minute walk from all the nightlife, though in October there wasn't much of that around! Couldn't fault the hotel or the staff. Nice spa as well which had special offers every day and I availed of plenty of them. Restaurant is buffet style though and it was pretty expensive to eat in and I didn't like the food very much. breakfast was the same deal.

I have never been on a 'sun holiday' of any sort so I was amazed at how cheap it was to eat out in Malta. You could get two pizzas, local wine and a couple of minerals for less than 20 euro! We went to a five star hotel one night for our dinner and had been warned it was really expensive but for starter, mains, dessert and some cocktails i think it was less than 70. Compared to dublin prices I thought eating out and drinking was unbelievably cheap.

Best area to stay: depends on what you're looking for? st julians was fine lots of restaurants and pubs but parts of it were really tacky and in the summer its probably thronged.

Activities: its supposed to be brilliant for diving and there are loads of places offering trips, courses etc. I did about three or four day trips around the island and over to Gozo so saw a good bit of the place. And for the rest of the time i lounged by the pool, ate and drank!

Its really easy to get around by public transport, they have a brilliant bus system, complete with ancient buses and crazy drivers, which means you can get around the whole island for something like 40c a trip.

Now Malta is known as a bit of an oldies destination and to be honest the age group on the flight over is certainly well up there but I enjoyed it. I think it would be good if you're into watersports, history (to my surprise it has lots!) or just generally into a laid back holiday wandering around the towns and villages.

on my trip over to malta on ryanair, ex snooker world champ ken doherty was sitting directly in front of me, slept like a baby the whole trip too

i found malta really cheap too for food especially, we stayed in valletta, its a great base because all the public buses leave and return from here

very little nightlife in valetta but st julians has lots of bars and clubs and is like 5 miles down the road and easily accessible by bus from valletta

people of places to see on the main island and as the previous person said a day-trip to gozo will pass the time, again buses from valletta to places like golden bay, dingli cliffs and the Blue Grotto

personally i would recommend visiting malta in february, thats when the valletta carnival takes place

    Thanks

Looking at going in mid september and flights are 440 which seems high enough for ryan air and theres quite a few days with no flights. My dates also arent very flexible so my choice is limited.

Yeah seems like a nice relaxed relitivily cheap place to go.

On the activities front so far ive found lots of day trips and island cruises and of course diving.

Is there any particular school you'd recommend im thinking of doing an open water cert while there.
