You could use a leakdown tester if you want to avoid possibly causing more damage to it.

Basically it just injects compressed air down through an injector/glow plug hole ( with piston at TDC) , the gauge on it will show what % leakage you have and you can hear the air leaking out the exhaust/inlet. Requires a small bit of care.

You can make and use a simple version if you are careful. You need a source of (dry) compressed air , a small regulator, a needle valve to control the airflow and an old glowplug from a scrapyard.

Remove the centre from the glowplug and clean it up so bits won't end up in your engine.

Braze on a small piece of pipe so you can attach a hose to it. Connect it to the needle valve and regulator.

Remove the air feed pipe from the intake manifold.

Since the belt is broken anyway , lift the cam up. Get the first piston to TDC and lock the crank , remove the glowplug , thread in your new toy and feed in some air ( you don't need much pressure )

You will hear air leaking from the intake or exhaust if there is a valve bent.

You need to be careful , if its not dead on TDC and locked , it will swing over with a small bit of force ( hence why i suggested lifting the cam )
