Your tie dosen't have to be black but just contain black. Try and find something with black in the patterning.
Failing that try wearing a knitted tie instead as they are less formal and hence less likely to be seen as funerial.
Last option (from me anyway) is to find out what colour she is going to accessorise with and then match that with your tie instead. I imagine she may go with gold shoes & bag & bling so get a gold tie.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I wore a black tie to my debs. It looked very well if I may say so myself. Black tie, white shirt and a black patterned waistcoat looks well.

Yeah i might go for black and silver..or maybe black and grey..

Or if you say that it looked good for your debs i might just go with a black tie.

    Thanks very much!

Black tie on a man is never dull! Coloured ties remind me of work clothes. It's a classic and elegant look.

    1) If there's a choice over the colour of your tie then I assume the dress code for your debs is "Formal" and not "Black Tie".

    2) For your tie, if you want to wear black then I suggest something with texture such as a grenadine. Also learn how to knot it properly.

    3) If you want to match your girlfriend's accessories, suggest wearing a pocket square (pocket handkerchief) in a matching or complementary colour to her shoes & bag. Much more subtle than matching the tie; better still, it leaves just black and white framing your face which is, quite simply, a classic look. Use your head though - if her shoes and bag are in shocking pink, go for a pale pink square :)

Points 2) and 3) above will rule out any funeral confusion.

Lastly, in order to make this work really well, make an investment in a good quality white shirt that fits you properly as well as some decent shoes.

if you want to be formal, you could wear a wing collar with a black tie in a large knot, rather than the bigger collars you get for say, office type shirts. looks very cool, but you do need to wear a waistcoat with it, to balance it out.

This prob will sound a bit out there but a white tie could look good! Two lads I know wore black/grey suits and a winter white & white tie! Looked so slick! And with black shoes looked very very classy not cheap.

But you need a good quality shirt and tie i.e. not tipp ex white and not as thin as a school shirt.

    Dont do this, looks horrific.

Wear a black and white tie if you can find one.

I know many people that didn't wear a white shirt, and it still looked good. Alot of people wore black shirts which didn't look so good. Be a bit different and wear a light blue shirt or something or a grey suit can look good too.

it might look a bit bleak in pictures if you're both dressed head to toe in black. do you know what colour she's accessorising in? cos that could look good, if your tie matched her accessories but your tux matched her dress. :)
