How do you call "up and over", "Pothole", "Car up" etc in silence?

Sign Language! Or some sort of complicated lighting system maybe.

The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways.

Surely that's not going to help ... assertive cycling cannot be silent cycling ... makes no sense!

Max of 20kph... how can you race at that speed? Also, I'm far too loud and in love with the sound of my own voice to do anything in silence :)

I think we'd be better served by promoting cycling as a fun thing to do rather than as a dangerous pursuit for self-righteous inconveniences (which is how we are often perceived it seems).

Taking over the roads to draw attention to our supposed victimhood is not going to earn us any respect out there, no matter how noble the intention, and respect is (part of) what will make things safer for us.

If accidents are to be prevented it would be more effective to promote cycling as a safe, healthy and life affirming thing to do, thereby increasing our number, and giving us a stronger road presence, slowly and incrementally changing the mentality of both motorists and cyclists that we are valid and legitimate road users entitled to all the privileges of any other (and subject to rules like any other). A man can dream.

My heart goes out to those who get hurt or die, but improving things for those of us still out there on the bike must be the priority. I'm not convinced rides of silence (which seem like a more sober, though equally self-righteous, critical mass cycle) are really helping.

Something like a fun run, 10k cycle through the city would be better.

And just exaggerate the lethality of cycling? No thanks.

Just close off a route in town and let people cycle it.

A mass start just like all the 10k runs.Imagine if you could encouage all the parents you see out with the kids on those tricycles that have the walking bar to join in as well. Those kids wold never forget the 1st time they rode down O'Connell st and would be hooked for life:D

I reckon we'd whip those little kids on the tricycles, if it is mass start there would need to be some sort of handicap system.
