Next day. They can if they want import it straight after this period.
    When must I Register?
If you bring a vehicle into Ireland from abroad you must register it and pay VRT by the end of the next working day following its arrival in the State.

You are supposed to VRT the car within 24 hours of importing it into the country but when I imported in 2006 I VRT'd it 6 weeks later due to the wait for the certificate of permanent export and to give my finances a chance to build back up. Once you are not driving the car and keep it parked on private property or garaged as I did then they will not go after you unless you draw them on you by driving it around and acting the mickey while driving etc.

A friend of mine has a NI reg 4X4 in Ireland parked up for the last year and a half and went to VRT it about a week after buying it and got a heart stopping VRT price and left them the Registration Certfificate and they never tried to confiscate it but he hasn't being driving it as it waiting for the VRT to come down in price, It defeats the point of buying abroad really but some people won't part with the dosh too easily.

Get an adress in Derry, (you can rent rooms from Daft for £100 / month), get a Northern licence and don't pay the VRT.

You have the added bonus of no penalty points or fines as the Garda cannot apply them to your 'new' license.

Also - no test required when you already have a full Irish license.

    You've gone from this:
Any truth in the rumour that if you have a Northern Ireland address for a while, you can skip the VRT payment. I heard of people who have rented a cheap rooms in Derry straight out of daft just to get an address up there?
