Okay I have an article ready to go, Its topical, insightful and entertaining. :) It has nice quotes and I think someone should be interested in it. Trouble is....who do I pitch to?

    The editior?
    The features editors?

Should I call the offices and speak to someone or send the article it in to (for example) features@theirishpaper.ie
Is there a better chance of seeing it in print in a weekend editon or not?
I have been published elsewhere in magazines and websites but never newspapers...I want to break in!

Can you perhaps help on another issue too?

Have applyed to do an MA in journalism. I've heard they'll ask about your favourite reporter or journalist or at least one you admire. Thing is I dont have one.
I dont want to be a reporte really, rather a features/magazine writer. Is there anyone, from this genre, who is very well respected that I can research about?
Who are the best journalists in the business?

    Thanks

The section editor is usually the best person to approach. Know his or her name, you can email it in but include a para saying why you think it would work in that particular publication.
As for the MA, I don't know if they ask those questions but I'd be straight up and tell them your area of interest.
Names of journalists? Internationally I'd say Seymour Hersh and Robert Fisk (although a lot of people think he's very biased)
At home it's hard to pick people out TBH, too many people doing diary stories.
    Good luck with everything

As mentioned above find out the name of the relevant editor and email it to them with a short note about who you are and a few lines of a pitch (and a contact number obviously).

I wouldn't send it to several of them if it's a feature as they won't publish a feature that others have too, it's not like news that way.

If it's related to a topical issue (right now, news wise) you'll have a way better chance.

    All the best with it.
