Packing in college

Hello everybody, I am in a bit of a fluster at the moment.

I am contemplating dropping out of second year of college despite having done quite
well in first year and second year semester one exams.

I have went to student counselling and been told before that 'Career guidence' would be
more appropiate, and also contacted the head of the school.

Mentioning depression/the like would not be worth my while, as this would affect academic
placments and possibly be frowned upon. I have been feeling very ****ty lately, but still just go along
with the flow in a...sedated manner.

Frankly, both parties are not providing me with a solution other than repeating full whack,
based on poor performance in two modules.

I have fallen behind in 2 subjects which constitute a huge mark overall for second year.
Repeating these two modules would cost a few thousand euro apparently, as they are not exam
    based like the others.

I feel at this stage, it would be more productive to simply not show up to college anymore, de-register
and if I feel like returning in the future, providing only my first year results of the degree to gain entry
    to another course.

I don't feel confident at all, and I believe sitting exams in my current state would mess things up as they would not be a true reflection of my abilities.

The course I am presently has a stupidly high drop out rate, and while I accept neglecting the above
subjects are my own fault, I don't think this course will suit me in the long run even though I find
    most aspects interesting.

The above would mean full fees, but I don't mind if I could start freash on a new slate.
I honestly just feel like never returning again at this stage despite enjoying some aspects
    of the course.

Oh well, may as well start looking for minimum wage jobs/dole : (

    Any advice will be appreciated.

Why have you done so badly this year?

It sounds like you are afraid of failure. If you are only in second year, it is likely that your mark doesn't count toward your degree. If that is the case, then I think you should knuckle down, put the bad marks behind you , and focus on passing as much as possible.

I was in the same situation last year (my third year). I was completely fed up with the course, and really felt like taking a year out and starting again the following year. My results were useless, and at the end of the day I just wasn't bothered. At the very last minute (I was going in to drop out for the year) I decided to stick it out and just scrape by, which I did. Now my academic record is completely inconsistent (a fail in first year, a first in second year and another fail in third year) but it's final year that really matters.

If it is the content of the course, or your disinterest in the course that is making you feel the need to drop out, then maybe it's worth considering. Furthermore, if you are depressed, or something outside of college is bothering you then get some professional help and maybe consider deferring. But again, it sounds to me like you are afraid of getting bad marks, or have somebody placing a lot of pressure on you to get good marks. If the reason is rooted in this, then I recommend getting the head down and doing your best. You'd be surprised how lenient lectures can be in giving you a pass mark. Passing after knowing you were at your worst is as good as getting a first when you knew you were at your best.

Hey OP. I did two years of college and dropped out to get into another course. Best decision I ever made. I know it's scary, but if you really want to drop out, you should. It's not as big a deal as you think it is; you'll know that you won't work in a profession you won't enjoy.
