The Bicycle Polo Association of Ireland is hosting an International Bicycle polo tournament from Friday 24th- Sunday 26th April. This will include The 1st leg of the European cup and The Phoenix Shield.

The event is being held at the Polo grounds in the Phoenix Park and will start at 10 each morning.

The countries attending are: Scotland, France, America, England and Ireland.

Support is greatly welcome and the polo stand will be open to all spectators.

It would be great if some of you could come up!:)

Sounds ridiculous - well worth a look.

I thought this stuff was normally done on a hard surface? Will they be rocking cross fixies?

I've a lovely pair of cream jodhpurs in the attic, but I don't think I'm brave enough to sport them in public

I thought this stuff was normally done on a hard surface? Or maybe that was the sort with the footballs.

I've a whip at home and could probably get my hands on some racing silks if you'd like!

Cream jodhpurs, small racing silks, exposed midriff, whip. Maybe Tiny would be interested?

Well it's also played on a hard court but this is the traditional game, played on the grass!

We use special made bicycle polo bikes which are fixies, you can try them out if you come down!

It's a bit of a terrible piture, but it should give you an idea of the bikes we use! Can't really see it in the pic but the seat tube is curved to let the wheel sit in closer to the frame and the saddle is laid back!

What time do they matches end and how long is each match?
If its nice weather, I think I can persuade my friend to spend some time in Phoenix Park :)

The last match will start at six.

Each match will be forty minutes long!

It would be great if you could persuade your friend cause it will be deadly if lots of support turns up!

No it's all completely free and the you can sit in the stand too. The club house will be open for refreshments!

Its really close to the zoo so thats handy.
Below is a map of where it is :

A bit of background on Bicycle Polo . The game was invented by Richard Mecredy who lived at Fassaroe in Bray. The first game was played in 1891 at the Scalp near Enniskerry. Great to see an international tournament being held in the Phoenix Park.

It was also in the London Olympics in 1908!

A full history can be found on the irish bicycle polo website, but it is currently having difficulties so below is a link to the french polo site!

This sounds great! I'll be over this afternoon to have a look at some games, hopefully the rain will stay away. I wanted to try this out last year but never got around to it, I will try not make that mistake this year

The weather fainally brightened up and The Ireland 1 team beat Oakendale pedlers (England) 2-0. Unfortunately we lost a close match to Saint Vic (france).

We are playing America and Scotland tomorrow and then there will be a traditional game played against the Scots, which is with a hard ball and there is pretty much no rules, so expect to see brawls on the bikes!

A few pics from yesterday. Wasn't able to pick a match due to sprog-herding, so just snapped whoever was in front of me!
