Can somebody explain to me what bullets I can use in my .22. I have been told that I dont need to only use .22lr The standard .22 cci subsonics that we use on the range and that these are a bit lightweight when it comes to foxing unless you can call in the fox close. Also what choice of ammo do I have for my cz and do I need to take off the moderator for different velocity bullets, sorry If I sound lost but am just a tad confused over the ammo debate.cheers

This has been covered so many times here on these forums. The 22lr is realy not used for shooting foxes because as you say they are a bit lightweight.

I use Eley and Lapua subs all the time for target and rabbits (out to 100m +) as they always groupe well for me. ANY/ALL of the High Velocity do not groupe at all well for me so I don't use them.

This is my CZ Style 22lr.

As stated previously this has been done to death but I'll throw in my twopence worth.

I have shot foxes with a 22lr using velocitor bullets called them into approx 80 yards.

I then got the 22 magnum (remington 597) and had no problem shooting foxes dead 100 yrds out to a max 120 yrds. (this was my favorite) had it for 2 years and got 79 foxes.

I now have a 22 hornet and shoot foxes 150-180 yrds. (but always try to call them into around 100 yrds.

100 yrds is a long distance at night with a lamp.

I wouldnt recommend a 22lr for foxes minimum I'd go for is the 22 hornet. Its a tried and tested round that has accounted for more foxes up my neck of the woods. All the older guys I know have 22 hornets. They are also handy to get because of people (young uns:D) trading them for fan dangle calibers such as 223.

I bought a .22 hornet myself a while back the ammo is a bit dearer i considered a .223 rem but i like the german made rifle i have, there aint that much of a difference in effectiveness betwen the .22 hornet and .223 rem for hunting foxes, its the man behind the gun that matters, any foxes i shot were all under 100 yards , its hard to get a ready made benchrest in the middle of the field(for that 150 yard plus shot). I am primarily a shotgun shooter myself, Im new to this fox shooting scene , has anyone found calling in at evenings or early morning yield many foxes this time of year!

I have had no problem particulalry if you deal with the same man for all your guns, it's called epeat buisness.

I use Hornady rounds at €22 a box, two boxes a year isnt OTT considering last year I spent about €400 on shot gun shells.

I find the Hornet is more than ample for shooting foxes particulalry at night using a lamp. I looked at the 223 lamped with lads that have 223 even looked at 204 and nearly bought one, but when all is said the hornet does the same thing at the ranges I want to do it at.

So what times do you head out at? I suppose at around 430pm onwards this time of year, and call in areas in which foxes are! I heard the time the young cubs are about foxes do most of their damage to ground nesting birds (pheasants) ! I noticed with fox shooting that you travel out some occasions get no shot or see no fox, but hey that the nature and sport of hunting!!
