Tipping Dive Instructors

    I'm just back from Egypt where I did the PADI Open Water Diving course. On the plane home I wondered whether or not I should have tipped my instructor? What is the norm?

    When doing my first course we took our instructor and his wife out for a meal and drinks (lovely place and it cost a pittance - dinner for 4 and beers cost about €50). I think he appreciated it.

    Second time I gave the lad some money - mainly cos he told me what he was earning! Couple of liveaboards I've tipped the guides as once again I think the pay is fairly dire and if they do a good job then I think a tip is appropriate.

    Thanks Bigfeller, I actually posted him a thank you letter and a small cheque in appreciation. I'm mortified I hadn't done it at the time. Us Irish are useless at tipping!!!Hopefully he'll get it ok.

    yeah I'd generally tend to tip a dive operator, as long as they didn't own the business. Divemasters are usually not paid too well and they tend to appreciate the few bob.
    But it annoyed me a bit in Costa Rica once when diving with an American dive shop they told me a tip was expected before we even went out on the water.
