Cycling holidays in Ireland

We were in Achill last week and noticed a few well marked cycle routes around the island.

This reminded us that we haven't brought the bikes on camping holidays with us for a long time because of our perception that narrow country roads with cars baling by at 100km/h just aren't really safe any more. Whatever about me getting on the bike to shoot down to the shops it just seems that Irish roads by and large aren't safe for children on bikes any more.

The routes in Achill looked safe enough because the roads looked so narrow that I don't think anyone could travel fast on them.

Does anyone know of other places around Ireland where safe cycle routes like this exist ? I know in the UK (including the North) that there are long distance routes marked out, but I haven't noticed the same here.
