Boyfriend's weight issues

Hello, my bf is a little down over his body, basically he is rather skinny, I don't mind it really but he wants to bulk up a bit. He smokes quite a bit which I know won't help as it speeds up your metabolism.

He drinks beer rather a lot too but the calories don't seem to be clinging on! He eats healthily apart from the odd junk food binge occasionally and it does nothing. I only need to look at a bag of crisps and my belly gets bigger!

Are there any tips for him to get some meat on his bones? Such as vitamins, what food etc... He is 5' 11 and about 10st. I am heavier than him!:o (I am 5' 8 and 11st! But that's another story! :D)

Any help would be appreciated. :)

I'd stay clear from the magic shakes and bulk up supplements. Just eat healthily and use ingredients in his food, like cream, real butter, etc. Buy a Darina Allen cookbook and he'll be putting the pounds on as naturally as possible.

Thank you for the speedy responses! I couldn't find a fitness forum apart from the fitness logs, is that correct?

Thank you for the book rec, will try that. I don't get how he isn't fat, he sometimes has McDonalds, he loves ice cream, it isn't fair! :D

I am not too keen on him going to the gym as his mate does it and does steriods and I don't want him going down that route!

No problem. Have a look at some of the recipes and you'll see what I mean. Nearly everything in her books is positively calorific, yet normal healthy and natural food. I put on weight reading the books. I'd spread it out to, it should be a very slow gradual process.

Less beer and more chocolate cake.

I believe that there is a snickers cake with around 2000 calories a slice and a slice of that for breakfast each morning should work.

Real food should work - but are you sure he has not a medical issue to be excluded- foods allergies, ceoliac etc

Id disagree with the idea of eating nothing but crap to try put on weight. Be healthy about it. Just eat higher calorie foods ie potatoes, pasta, bread milk, that kind of thing. Im sure there are some good books you could pick up.

He basically has to eat more - but more of the right stuff.

Hi carb/protein food should help him bulk up quite a bit. Plenty of rice/pasta/potato, meat, bread etc.

Ensure he has a good breakfast every morning, good size lunch, good dinner, and eat another meal before going to bed.

He could do the whole oats thing too, but if he's not into bulking too much, tht might be out of the question as they're not the easiest to eat (slushy goop, really not appetising).

But the fitness forum generally has good advice on bulking up, and there's plenty of knowledgeable folk there too.

But defo avoid the crap for bulking up. He wants to bulk up, not to become fat with crap skin, low libido, no energy etc

I think you're all looking at this the wrong way. In my opinion the problem isn't how to put on some weight its why is he unhappy with his weight. Most people want to be skinnier, this is for two reasons firsly to lok better and secondly because thinner is healthier, (obviously this is only to a certain extent, but if bf is eating healthy this isn't the issue).

So if he wants to bulk up there is no point in just eating more calories that will just end up with fat being added on which is neither healthy or good looking, the way he should bulk up is by building muscle mass, I don't mean to lok like a body builder just a small bit of muscle. And the only way to achieve this is through exercise. It doesn't necessarily have to be through the gym, a couple of push ups and situps at home and go for some runs of cycles will do the job. Also in regard to the steroids the majority of people going to gyms don't take steroids, but if you find he is thinking about steer him clear.

There's no point going to the gym, doing exercise etc if he's not eating the correct foods to build the required muscle mass.

He should start by bulking a little first, then move onto the exercise while still consuming the correct foods.

If he starts to do lots of exercise while not eating enough, it will have the opposite effect of reducing his weight, as his body will start to consume itself to supply the required energy for the exercises - he will become skin and bone.

I'd say gym is the way to go. Only people really into bodybuilding do steroids. Eating cream and other fat is a stupid thing to suggest. There's also no point taking shakes unless he's working out.

How old is he? If he's early 20s he'll put some weight on soon enough.

Lift heavy weights and research a little bit about nutrition. Job done

Same problem meself. Small appetite. Only one thing works for me - sport.
It triggers a bigger appetite and everything else follows. The trick for me is to play a game I enjoy - soccer. I hate gyms .

A bit of both. The OP talked about his junk food etc and how he never puts on weight. Presumed she wasn't as concerned with muscle as opposed to mass.

Your bf might have inherited a gene which determines a slim body build. There are different way to achieve weight gain. One is to eat food which is high in calories and to try not to overdo the wrong type of exercise.

Fats are the food which are highest in calories but most likely to be deposited in the body as fat. a diet based on a lot of fats is detrimental to a persons health. Other foods such as carbohydrates and proteins could also add weight to a body's frame if not enough exercise is done to burn them up.

The best way of improving his physique is to build up the muscle content thru weight training. I suppose at first he should keep a diary of his food intake and then assess it a week later to see where extra healthy additions could be added. Plus get a set of weights he could use at home and start off there.

    Hope this helps!!!

PS This advice is uncertified. I'm doing a fitness course as i'm overweight and i want to improve myself but i'm not a qualified fitness instructor yet

it does not speed up your metabolism!!
it may supress your appetite but thats a whole different thing.

tell him to eat more and cut out the stinking smokes..

Eat lots, drink lots of milk and lift heavy weights.

If you work out how many kcals he's eating a day, it's probably not that high. He may eat mcdonalds, but whats his breakfast and lunch like? How many snacks a day does he eat?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

OP, maybe he doesn't eat very much. Even if you sometimes eat high-cal stuff, you won't put on weight if you have little else.

Closed. better suited to the fitness forum.
