Tea Party, Crash Test Dummies, Hawskley Workman...

The Tea Party (tracks like Heaven Coming Down, Babylon, Angels)
Crash Test Dummies (Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, Afternoons & Coffeespoons, God Shuffled His Feet)
Hawksley Workman (Jealous Of Your Cigarette, Striptease, Smoke Baby)
The Tragically Hip (Little Bones, Ahead By A Century, New Orleans is Sinking)
Born Ruffians (Hummingbird, Barnacle Goose, I'm One Of Those Girls)
Stars (Take Me To The Riot, Reunion, Your Ex-Lover Is Dead)
Our Lady Peace (Automatic Flowers, Clumsy, Superman)
    Sarah McLachlan
(Adia, Blackbird, I Will Remember You)
Loreena McKennitt (Dante's Prayer, Bonnie Portmore, The Highwayman)
Broken Social Scene (Shampoo, Lover's Spit, Stars and Sons)
Matthew Good Band (Hello Time Bomb, Load Me Up, Everything is Automatic)
    Cowboy Junkies
(Sweet Jane, Misguided Angel, Blue Moon Revisited)
Great Lake Swimmers (I Am Part of a Large Family, Your Rocky Spine, There Is A Light)
Ashley MacIsaac (Sleepy Maggie, Hills of Glenorchy, Lay Me Down)
    Edwin (Alive, Trippin', And You)
Sam Roberts (Uprising Down Under, With A Bullet, Bridge to Nowhere)
The Guess Who (These Eyes, original American Woman, No Time)...

..I'm curious if anyone's heard of any of these Canadian bands & artists. They're not all alternative/indie but close enough. Chances are you've definitely heard Crash Test Dummies though you might not recognize the name (Weird Al did a satire of their "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" song), and you've probably heard The Tragically Hip, Sarah McLachlan, Broken Social Scene, Born Ruffians had a track in Skins and Cowboy Junkies did the version of Sweet Jane that's in Natural Born Killers, but the rest I somehow doubt it.

Artists like City & Colour, Tegan and Sara and the Barenaked Ladies (god love 'em) seem to have made it big outside of Canada (not to mention the greats like Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Rush, etc but they're a different ballgame altogether), but as a rule Canadian music tends to stay put, which is a shame because we tend to have a fairly unique brand of sound.

Anyway, I suggest checking out some if not all of the above if you haven't heard of them.. a lot of them are incredibly different to one another.

Let me know what you think, be interesting to see what other people think of them.

Yeah, Arcade Fire are already quite well known. Final Fantasy is Canadian and not that well known, just forgot about them. And of Montreal isn't actually Canadian, I don't think..

There's a lot on my own list which I'm not crazy about, and a lot that I love, I'm just curious about others' points of view. A lot of it is admittedly 90's, it's all stuff I grew up listening to and grew out of for the most part. Still love Crash Test Dummies to bits though.

I seen 'Stars' last year in Cyprus Avenue in Cork, fantastic gig. I also saw Rufas Wainwright solo in the Opera House, another great gig, and Neil Young in one of the best gigs ever in cork. I also saw Ron Sexsmith a few years ago..

I didn't realise I'd seen three Canadian acts live last year. I'm also off to Leonard Cohen this year.

I've only heard of a few from the list..must check some out.

The Dummies, Stars, McKennitt, Matt Good Band has some good (albeit slightly dated) tunes. Like Cowboy Junkies too but they definitely wouldn't be everyone's bag. Tragically Hip are good too.

Love Cowboy Junkies. I like that Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm number by Crash Test Dummies too - didn't at the time but I've come to appreciate its really beautiful and sad melody.

Hawksley Workman does an amazing and really beautiful version of Bankrobber by The Clash. One of the best cover versions I've ever heard.
