What the best software to convert from mkv to avi?

I tried Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate & it does convert it but it seems to have lost one of the audio channels (Sound only through one speaker after convert).

The option I chose to convert to was "XviD (*AVI)" but didn't try any of the other options.

Is there anything that would be more successful? (Pay or free).

I could only get xilisoft to work with the xbox360 MCE HD avi files and I stopped using it a while ago cos it started to crash on me :(

keeps the hd quality & large file size but cant confirm the 5.1 sound as I dont have my 360 on surround sound

I used this just there, and it converted a 720p .mkv I selected the xbox playform, but didn't select a "reencode to" option.
it made it a mpeg4.. but this still doens't show up on the xbox.. am I doing something wrong?

I just used Quick Media Converter recommended by Joeface & it converted the mkv to avi perfectly.

I used the XviD option (Xvid (avi 16.9) because I wanted it to play on both my media player & Xbox.

XviD/avi will play fine on Xbox.

I'm sure there would be some quality loss but to be honest I didn't notice any. Might be different on a larger screen though?

Would you not just extract the audio and video streams out of the mkv container (using mkvextract or similar) and mux them into a mp4 or avi container? Takes about a minute.

You might need to transcode the audio (to AAC if it's not already), but you should be able to keep the video stream intact (I presume its h264), and it'll save a lot of time instead of transcoding to xvid (which will lose a tonne of quality also).

I don't have an xbox, so im not 100% sure which formats etc it will play, but if it's possible it would be the handiest and quickest way.

GotSent is the only converter i use. I use it to convert 720p mkv with no problems so far.

    Follow this tutorial

Its for an older version of GotSent but is 99% similar. Steps 1-3 are all you'll need.
You will need to install AC3Filter to rencode the audio from 5.1 to 2.0. A bit of a bummer but has to be done as the 360 only supports 5.1 in wmv.

Your mp4 file should only be slightly smaller as the only thing re-encoded is the audio. Video quality will remain untouched.

so anywany left that qiick media last night create the file for the xbox(it was doing it for about 4 hours and had not finished so left it over night, the file zize was over 8 gig..
woke up this morning and it was a mpeg4 1.59 gig..
and.. when i go into video player on the xbox it doesn'tsee it..
think i might just go buy a play station to play the .mkv...

It's taking so long because you're transcoding a high-def h264/avc video stream into another format.

It's a waste of time, keep the video in the same format and just mux it into a mp4 container.

(or buy a €95 WD HD Media player, plays everything ;) including mkv containers)

if only MS would release an update to the formats playable on the 360 it would save a lot of grief.

    I can hope right
