Well here in the southern hemisphere the ski season is almost upon us. With this in mind and myself probably going to get a season's pass where by I want to be skiing most weekends instead of getting rentals, I am looking to buy a pair of ski boots.

So what are the differences? I have skied twice before. I know that the most important thing is to get the fit right. Other then that is there a make I should look out for or are they pretty much the same?

    How about these guys?

You should probably get someone knowladgeable to fit you with boots. They're probably a once-off purchase!

Their are different types of boots. Basically from beginners (which are somewhat 'comfortable') to race boots which when tight are not what could be classed as comfortable to wear. There's 2 or 3 steps in between too. Then there is a different quality of boots inside those categories - this is pretty much reflected in the price.

As long as you go to a good bootfitter that knows their stuff they should be able to put you in something appropriate. I think that some brands of boot are more suited to different foot shapes as well to some extent so really need to see what they put you in. Solomon and Rossignol are two of the more common brands, but there are several others as well that they may try you in. Also make sure you go back to them afterwards if you then notice any problem with how comfortable the fit of the boot isafter you have actually been skiing in them.

A good bootfitter will see you right with a decent pair of boots. They will reccomend the pair that best suits your ski level and the shape of your foot. The most important thing is the correct fit. There are a number of quality brands, but each brand would be better suited to different shapes of feet. The boots are the most important bit of your ski-equipment.
The boot should allow for some development in your skiing.

    A good bootfitter will
    1) measure your foot
    2) ask you about your standard of skiing
    3) look at your foot and what shape it is
    4) put your bare foot into the boot without the liner and see what space there is.
    5) possibly propose a custom made footbed
    6) mould the liner to your feet.

As an aside....an important thing to consider is socks. Plenty of people ski using those thick tube socks - if you are going to buy a pair of boots then it is time to buy the thinner socks - smartwool ones or the medium thickness ones. Again a good boot fitter will have good socks for sale.

The boot should be as snug as you can bear without hurting you. The toes should be snug, i.e. up against the end when you stand but absolutely fine when you flex forward.

    Thanks for all your help.

Had a look at a few shops and think I will be getting a pair of Nordica boots.
    They fitted very well!
Ill post the link when I am sure!
