MADMTB are pleased to announce an MTB XC-travaganza on 3 Rock Co. Dublin, 10th May 2009.
This event is being held to part-celebrate the 20th Anniversary of MADMTB: 20 Years Offroad 1989 to 2009.

The event is basically a loop of the best trails on 3Rock and can be ridden anyway you like.
Spot prizes will be awarded on a random basis and there will also be awards for the first finishing teams home - the trick being that you won’t know who is on your team until after you sign on.
Your race plate will include your number and your team number, it will be up to you to hunt-out your teammates and quickly swap power-gels, calibrate heart-rate monitors, drill holes in your saddles and formulate your winning plans…..

This event has been made possible via close co-operation with local landowners and Coillte, and we hope everything goes smoothly in order that we will be able to host further races in the area in future. With this regard, please take all your litter home with you and be respectful of other users of the forest on the day.

The event will be fully marshalled so make sure to cooperate with them as they’ll be doing their best to ensure that you get the best out of your day.

New trails have been specifically constructed by the MADMTB Singletrack Engineering Division for the event which offer a large variety of terrain which has something for everyone from fast sweeping fireroad with great views out over Dublin Bay and to the Sugarloaf, short rocky paths, fast easy singletrack, twisty switchback challenging technical singletrack, bombholes, dips, lips, swoops, whoops and not forgetting and a nice climb or two thrown in for the craic.
Info on distance and approx. time for completion will be added soon.

    Schedule:
The course WILL NOT be marked on the Saturday, sign-on will be on Sunday morning from 8:00am to 10:30am.
The event will kick-off at 11am, it will take you approx 15 mins to cycle up the start line from the parking field so ensure to arrive in plenty of time!
Parking will be in a private field on the Glencullen side of 3Rock.
The field is on your right as you drive towards Glencullen from Ballyedmonduff/Stepaside direction.

    Trail preview:
    Coming soon…

    Howdy all
Just a quick reminder of this event on Sunday 10th May.
MAD are busy trailbuilding this and next week cleaning up existing classics like "Rock n' Roll" and "Romper Schlomper" and creating some great brand new trails for you to enjoy, you'll love them all!

We are delighted to announce that both Cycle Surgery and O.C. Tuning will be sponsoring this event.
Cycle Surgery are located in Dundrum just a gap jump or two from 3Rock and operate a well stocked store full of biking goodies, get down to their shop and have a look around or checkout their website.

OC Tuning are based out of Crumlin, Dublin and are Ireland's only authorised Fox Racing Shox service & warranty centre, offering very fast (usually same day turn around) and very thorough and professional service.
James from OC Tuning intends to bring along some of his considerable collection of mountainbikes which cover a long era of mountainbiking history -
come along and see the bikes and have a chat with James about the technology advances in suspension and frame designs that got us to where we are today.
James will also be on hand to assist with repairs on the day, but be sure to pack a pump, spare tubes and a multi-tool to keep yourself moving!

We hope to have online sign-on available in a few days, there will be a random draw for vouchers from our sponsors for all entrants who use the online system, so use the system and be in with a chance to nab a nice voucher for yourself.

    Some event info:
The entrance fee for the event is 20 euro.
Remember that if you do not have a full/competition Cycling Ireland licence you will need to buy a 1-day licence.
A 1-day licence is 10 euro for Cycling Ireland members, and 15 euro for non-members and will be on sale from 9am on the day.
More info here on how to determine what type of licence you have:

Registration on the day opens at 9am until 10:30am.
    The event kicks-off at 11am.

There will be full colour customised number-plates for the first 200 entrants, they are yours to keep and show-off!

The 'random team' system is intended to bring the MTB community a bit closer together by meeting other bikers and sharing in the fun.
Basically, you will get a number plate at sign-on and this will show your race number, and also your team number.
You can hunt-out your team members after sign-on, and we'll be calling the teams together near the start line so at least you can grab a glance at who your best new biking friends are, you never know who you might be teamed-up with...

The average finish time of each team will be calculated at the finish line and the 3 fastest teams will be awarded the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals accordingly.

There will of course be tea and sambos laid on for the post-event chill-out & chat.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

More updates soon or check the MAD MTB website for the latest news and updates.

MAD MAX-XC Trail preview part 1:
Start off with a frantic Le-Mans style sprint then hop on what hopefully is your own bike and up the fireroad. No sooner warmed-up than you'll be dropping down right into the first singletrack of the day: MX Swoop down onto a nice fast singletrack section then sprint up Granny Wrecker - a steep but very short kicker, then over the fallen tree, down the bank and soon to switch down right across the wall into a long & fast downhill singletrack, dropping you out onto a left hand fireroad sweep. Over the small bank then more downhill singletrack. Drop out left onto the fireroad, and up the intense-but-short fireroad climb. Over the hump and continue up Creaky Crank.
Break left at the junction and another sandy/rocky/loose section to the fireroad. Dublin Bay soon comes into view then you'll be ripping down right through T-Connector where the gorse has been slain to make a nice connecting run to the next solid fast downhill section. Dive straight into the forest and blast your way through the large intestine that is Rock n Roll.

MAD MAX-XC Trail preview part 2:

Blast out of Rock n Roll across the fireroad over the big hump and negotiate the roots, dips, and drops of CrossMax. Get catapulted down the chute from CrossMax and into a left-hand swooper turn down into Aggro. Hammer across the descent with your tyres frantically grabbing at the roots for grip and out onto the Blue Light Run which takes you across the face of the hill towards the Boneshaker. Scrabble up the big slabs throgh the rocky gap and switch-up into Naked Romp. Put your pants back on then down into the real techy tester that is Romper Schlomper. Switch and carve your way down this baby (making sure not to fall off the bridge down 40ft to your ultimate doom - chicken run available!) and across the forest floor to more tech track on the far side. Up a bit of hard black stuff to catch your breath then a right hander into Forgotten and then down through the bombhole and up the sandy climb past Tom's towards Kilmashogue. Around the left hand u-turn and along the trail towards A1 Sharon.

MAD MAX-XC Trail preview part 3 (final preview):

Power your way along the narrow singletrack track over the fallen-tree hip and you'll come to a small clearing - catch a half second of sun then hop in left into A1 Sharon & rip your way over the slab, down the bank and finally get spat out onto the fireroad. Along the fireroad and up the small bit of tarmac and Dublin Bay will be on your left as you pedal on down into T-Connector where the satanic gorse has mutilated at the hands of MADMTB Singletrack Engineering Corps. Take a left down a steep rocky techy path and catch the small right-hand berm and into the first half of Rip Ride. Hop over the 5 or 6 big tree roots and out into the open section. Climb for 5 or 6 pedal strokes then off the small ledge and over and down the big rocks and into tight downhill forest. Wind all the way down through tricky but flowy turns - being careful not to bounce off the trees like a pinball, exiting just above the Blue Oyster trail you rode earlier. Up left to the fireroad climb all the way to the aerials and across the junction towards the upper masts. Keep right and you'll arrive on the loose rocky path which will bring you just above the dual sections of Satellite Run, and that's the last climb of the day -thank feck! In left and carve around the sandy left hander then over the hump and down through winding singletrack, popping or rolling off the bridge, more singletrack then drop 3 ft or roll into the lower section. Out of that, a quick left/right brings you into into Zippy, then down the hump and blast into the freshly manicured Bungle section. Finally back out on the fireroad you started on and pedal pedal pedal all the way down towards Glencullen direction and finally breaking left into the gap in the forest. Down another fireroad - this time a downhill much faster version with fast sweeping drifty turns, resist the desire to gap-jump the sandbunkers on the golf course and finally explode through the gate and into the field to tea, sambos and ULTIMATE GLORY!!!!!!

You have just been MAX-XC-ed !!

    Such pimping.

So any boardsies going to head along? Great chance to check out the 3Rock trails. I will probably be there marshalling or photographing or some sort of assistance.

Dirk, no problem after Djouce. Kenmc, you live around the corner. Tiny, you'll roll over it all on the full susser. Blorg, you need to conquer 3Rock after the Edge smashing. Aquinas, you need to forget about the horses. Who else was on our Balinastoe trip? Ah yeah, Alphalad, borrow the bosses bike, Neil, no trouble to you, you'll rocket around. Barrabus, make sure to wear bib tights. Lumen... leave the cyclocross at home.
