unusual VRT question

    Hey folks,

Just picked up a 1978 Mercedes 230C from the UK today.

While waiting for the ferry, I had a quick look through the V5 docs and noticed something unusual...

    It states:
    Date of first registration: 01/11/1983
Date of first registration in the UK: 01/11/1983

On the front of the V5, it states:
    "Special notes:
Was registered and/or used. Declared manufactured 1978"

My question is, will I have a battle on my hands with the VRT lads or will it be ok?

For the records, it's on a 1978 "S" registration, spent some time in Northern Ireland, judging by the etching on the glass and is definitely not a 1983 model!

Should be okay. It goes on first worldwide registration date.

Correct . Once you have the comment 'Declared manufactured ... " on the V5, you're OK. I've had this in a few cases too.

That;s how they do it in the UK when a car is imported from outstide the state: the date of first registration is nearly always the date the car was first registered in the UK, with a special note under Comments to state it's "Declared manufactured" at an earlier date

    Thanks for the reply guys!

Will there be any hassle at the VRT office, or are they aware of the slightly odd scenario?

    Also - 78 D or a ZV plate?!

Usually they are aware. Sometimes you get someone ignorant, and they need it spelled out to them. :D

Whether you opt for a 78D or ZV plate depends on personal preference. I think Dublin is still in a 4 digit run, but usually the ZV plates are five digits, and some think that looks dreadful.
If you opt for 78D, you (or a new owner) can always change it to ZV later, but not the other way around!!!

78-D-xxxx is in four figures now. Was around 1200 last Sept.

ZV xxxx is still four figures at the moment, somewhere in or around 9200 I guess.

Go ZV and get some white / red reflective plates with huge 3 1/2" digits.
