Race today around Stamullen - Any info?

Okay so today I was riding around the north side and passed the race going in the other direction. There were 4, or may be 3, groups cycling along and it looked like fun. There was such a cool 'buzz' off the wheel of the seconds group. I couldn't figure out if that group was the cat 1's, of the rich cat 3's, with their deep carbon wheels but it sounded so awesome--- I immediately decided to race in some of these races.

Does anyone know how often north side races are run etc? I just joined swords and will do their league after the ToI. Who runs the other northside races?

El Tonto (no longer his name ;) ) said that his wheels sounded cool and now I know exactly what he means. I'm starting to save now for some carbon wheels of my own... I won't start another which wheels thread.... the choice is obvious is my last name.

Vets (IVCA) were racing around Batterstown / Dunsany this morning. Three groups going around a 10 mile circuit.
Race start 9:15 finish approx 11:50.
    Could have been us, no?

I was racing in Stamullen today, as were a few other boardsies (all of whom did better than me). It's the Stamullen GP, held once a year. there. They changed the course this year because it clashed with a funeral. Still a very tough circuit. That climb was hell on earth.

The whirr is always ominous. You hear it just before you are about to be passed by the A bunch.

If you want to ride the open races, just keep an eye on the calendar at Cycling Ireland or Irishcycling.com. There are plenty of open races held in that part of the country during the year. There was one out in Balbriggan the other week for example.

Open races are a big step up from the club league as I discovered this weekend.

the Stamullen GP was held today, 6km from stamullen, around Bellewstown and Duleek. Open Races are held every sunday and occasionally on saturdays by CyclingIreland.

the Vets + Juniors had 4laps, S3 had 3 laps, and S1+S2 had 6 laps.

myself and el tonto were at the race. great weather! + hard racing!

Thanks for the replys guys. I'll get some swsords races under the belt first.... Sundays are not really available for my riding normally but I'll try and do one per month or something like that.

It was awesome.... picked up my spirits..... I still had 55km to home.

A few league races will allow you to get a feel for it alright. I'm doing a few open races more for the experience/training at the moment. The league is my main priority for this year.

I left mine at home today. All the whirring carbon in the world wouldn't have helped me today.

Were you racing at this Planet X? This was a race the vets had in honor of "Dick O Brien" my father in law who sadly passed away last year. Dick was a member of the IVCA and played a major role in raising the profile of the W200 over the last 6 or 7 years. In that time entries went from a few hundred up to and over 1500. He was a great organiser within the club and above all loved his racing and TTs RIP
By the way there were 90 in the race and it was of course handicapped. The first three across the line were ages 71, 72 and 75! respectively:eek: Absolute legends. they finished 30 seconds ahead of the galloping bunch (most of whom were on carbon wheels scott) The guy who was third, 75 years young and whom i know well, then cycled home to Navan:D

Good to see your racing Tonto/Mario or (see above post!) Hang in there. You wont believe how much it will do for your cycling. No training or club rides can simulate the real thing. Did Raam race?

@ba, well done it seems you are flying and well done to all boardsies

Yeah, I was there. think I came in just behind Tosh Lavery in third in the bunch sprint behind the first group, as you say, at 30 seconds or so.

The regular whining about your poor racing performances isn't going to impress anyone's girlfriend.

    Less modesty please, it's unbecoming.

anybody know why the vets & J race was stopped for a short delay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭ba

cause the C bunch caught them. i remember after passing through Duleek on the second lap, there was only a few hundred metres to the Vet bunch, so the Commissaire pulled them over just before the drag up to the Cairns.

Not same race. Do you cycle around this area? Seems like you are clocking up the miles regularly.

Yeah I live in Portmarnock and traing for the ToI so my 100 mile route, north side, is up the cost to JuliansTown, across to Duleek, Kentstown, Navan, Slane, Duleek, Julianstown, Coast Home. Its 160 kms so I have to add the extra km in around my car park. no point doing 99.3 miles.

I haven't figured out how to get through Drogheda properly yet otherwise I'd head up to Termonfeckin way along the coast.

When you pass through Julianstown village on the main road, there's a right hand turn just at the top of the hill, should be signposted for Laytown. Follow this road and it will take you all the way into Drogheda via coast road. It spits you out in Drogheda at the first bridge over the Boyne, turn right across the bridge and you can head down the opposite side of the river to Termonfeckin via Baltray.

    Scottie

Into Drogheda from Julianstown take 1st right go over the bridge and right down the quays, (Quay Cycles should be on your left) follow road along the river and you go through Baltray, and straight into Termonfeckin. Mapped a bit of a route for ya.

Thanks for the routes guys. Are these roads quiet or busy generally Saturday / Sunday ?

A slightly differnt way to Laytown is to go off the main N1 road at Mosney and follow the road alllllll the way down to Mosney and beyond it.Then at the junction go on straight, left brings you to the church at Julianstown. If you floow this road all the way to the estuary you will eventually come to the footbridge that leads over to the car park at the train staion at Laytown. In terms of mileage its probably shorter but a far more pleasant way to get to Laytown.
Sounds like a nice spin to Termonfeckin may be on the cards for Thursday

I like this shop, it's like an Aladdins cave. Last time I was in they had big cardboard boxes of stuff they were discounting, spent about an hour rummaging around and picked up a couple of bargins. Staff are nice too. Worth a look if passing.

@Scott - coast road is generally quiet enough, but if the weather is good there can be some traffic heading to Bettystown beach. The junction at the bridge in Drogheda is a bit hectic, but once you're over the other side you get out of the traffic quickly and avoid most of the town. Not sure how busy Baltray road is, never been out that way - not since I was a youngfella anyhow.

Baltray Road is fairly quite, Clogherhead to Anagassin is lovely.
