    hi,
i need help with an itinery for our honeymoon in south america, we're going december 28 into either rio or BA - which would be better for new years?
then the idea is to get either supercama buses or internal flights taking in the likes of iguazu falls, ille grande, rio etc
really want to do machu pichu so we'll need an internal flight to Lima and i think the salt flats are around there somewhere.

fly home from Lima then - has anyone done this route?
our time scale is just under 4 weeks

    thanks ;)

Having been to both Rio and BA recently, I would recommend Rio for NYE... BA is very nice but Rio has a better party feel to it and would be great fun. The Brazilians provide a better atmosphere IMO.

If you only have 4 weeks, I'd recommend bussing it to Iguazu from Rio (18 hours) and either flying from there to BA, and then to Cusco for Machu Picchu. Or just skip BA if a flight doesn't bring you thru it.

From Cusco it's 7 hours to Puno, and another 6 to La Paz (Cycle the worlds most dangerous road). From La Paz it's something like 10 hours to Uyuni, which is the start of the utterly amazing Salt Flats. Do the 3 day tour of unbelievable landscapes, multi-colour lakes filled with flamingos and a serious case of jaw-drop-fatige.

Another option would be to head from Iguasu to Salta in Northern Argentina; , and start the Salt Flats tour from there, heading in the opposite direction to that listed above: Salta->3 Day Salt Flats Tour ending in Uyuni->La Paz->Puno (Lake Titicaca, don't bother with the islands)->Cusco (Machu Pichu)->Lima

We spent 3 months in South America and it was excellent, but the route above covers the really top stuff. Just make sure you see Iguasu and the Salt Flats.
