Does anyone know if I can save any money here, the car failed the NCT due to rust, and it will have to be dumped in a few weeks, but I have paid insurance on it for all the way up to October. Can I retract/reclaim that insurance money?

Yes you can. Just ring your insurance company and tell them that you want to cancel the policy.

Yes, ring your insurance company, they will request your cert & disc back and then refund you part of your premium.

Yes you can change over your policy to your next car or if you wish, stop the policy and get money back based on amount of time left on policy. There are some rules with various insurance conpanies where if you are in your first year on the policy, they can keep a large percentage of the premium paid regardless.

As mickdw says, your first step should be to see how much the policy change will cost to move to your replacement car. Presumably you have an incomplete year's NCB caught up in the policy too. If you're not getting a new car or the policy change quote isn't competitive then you'll be able to get the remainder refunded. I'd definitely look at the change of policy option first though.
