The other day i plugged my headphones into my macbook, as i have done many times before, but i am no having a problem. today i started up my music and it wont play through the speakers, but WILL through headphones.

If i try and turn the sound up when the headphones are not plugged in i get the sound logo come up but underneath it there is circle with a line through it - basically if i dont have the headphones plugged in i cant get sound or turn it up, down or anything - its like my macbooks sound is locked unless headphones are in.

Also, the red light is on in the headphone jack which i presume means its selected as my output.

When u went to system preferences/sound, the only option under output is Digital out-built in output, and it says the selected device has no output controls.

ANY help u can give me would really be appreciated - how can i get my speakers to work again!?

Plug your headphones back in, and slowly pull them out again (and maybe wiggle the plug slightly)

It's a known issue: see here for some alternative solutions.
