Think you have to bite the bullet and go to the main stealer! Any ordinary key wont do. You'll be able to open the car but not start it as the new key will need to be coded.

What you could do is bring the two pieces of the key in, and they could hold the two together and cut a new key. AFAIK they can also replicate/copy the immobiliser for the key as well.

This is only a long shot, a friend got this done for his bike, and the parts manager in work was saying that they could replicate immobilisers. No harm in making a phone call.

If you do this, and leave the transponder part of the original key on the keyring, it should be read by the car as normal.

You can get a blade only key cut (like an old car key) for about a fiver (in Cork).

Happened to my father's colt. They wanted to charge €70 for a new one. He got a plain key cut for a fiver. Simply holds the broken old key against the new one when starting the car and it works fine.

Nice one lads. Thanks for all the help.

I'll ring around a few places tomorrow.

I was having nightmares about going to Renault.
