my local postman is a nice fellah and delivers all my small parcels fine.

but any large packages are usually dealth with terribly by an posts parcel delivery service

i do however get excellent service when my parcels are delivered by private companies. They come back more than once. Warn me in advance if i have to pay a customs charge. They will often ring and ask me a time and date of delivery that suits me. They are light years better than on post.

I don't think that you can generalise about parcel delivery services but I find An Post fairly good - a note always left in if parcel undeliverable and insured/damaged items compensated for eventually. My most recent experience - and not untypical - of parcel delivery by a private company was from TNT. A small packet of business cards - that could have very easily been stolen - was left on the pavement in the rain outside a closed shop premises. Only good luck saved it and although wet the contents were okay.

Years ago I gave up on Viking Direct because their private delivery company took to leaving their products in a public car park adjacent to my business if they could not get an answer at the door. :D

What I love about the An Post parcel service is the "tracking" that only tracks within Ireland, even for international deliveries.

I've been able to track An Post deliveries outside Ireland. It doesn't always work, but often it does. Similarly, I've been able to track incoming parcels.

You'll find Royal Mail the same, once it leaves their hands, they can no longer reliably track, or guarantee anything.

As for private agents being better, ever used GLS?
