There are good and bad cars both here and in England, i'd focus on the actual car rather than where it was first registered. The last two really good 205GTIs I saw were Japanese imports.

    FALSE!!!

when bringing in a car from england you gotta watch out for rust, thats the major killer! most older cars from england suffer it cos they salt their roads pretty much every night in winter. you would be better off getting one in ireland and restoring it, a lot more fun!

and judging from using text speak and your username your 18? you prob wouldnt get insured on a gti that easy, think about that

Yea but there left hand drive i seen a reali nice 1 on carzone for 3g
    Do u have a 205 yourself?

With 205 rust should not be a major problem, only place in the car where there might be rust is in the back, under the boot, where the spare wheel is.

My eyes are bleeding from trying to decipher your posts. Can you not use a full keyboard?

You may want to see if you can get insured on a 205 Gti before you set your heart on one.

    Firstly lose the txt speak.

I restored a 205gti with my cousin last summer, so i'll try and point you in the right direction as regards one.

Most importanty buy one with tons of service history. Its not economical to buy one with out, far too much leeway for problems.

Try to stick below 100k miles. These arent the bulletproof golf gti, and dont take the high miles so well. Even cars at 100k will be rattly, trim will be poor and the engine will not have an awful lot of life in them.

Engine wise, there good for 100k but after that the compression tends to go and seals fail. Look out for blue smoke. And white for the head gasket.

Gearbox is generally reliable with a quick clean shift. Loose shift is probably the linkage.

They were well galvinised in there day so any major rust suspect crash damage. Rust areas are the wheelarches and the lower sills. Laquer was known to peel aswell.

Right cheers for that now really helpful so it is
There is a gud few 1.6 around needing a bit of tlc alri tho

Say the insurance would be cheaper on a 1.6 to.

Insurance can be funny, as the lads said, i'd get a couple of quotes first.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 Bryan91

Yeah the lad also said that i should try an get one with less than 100,000k
That would be hard to find tough wouldnt it
What if u gave the engine a good going over without rebuilding?

Jap imports tend to have far lower mileage than European cars, you could keep an eye out for one of them? Be aware, though, that quite a few of them were auto.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 Bryan91

Yeah i look out for that

    Cheers

    Here's a tidy-looking 1.6: http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1307038

Looks like a UK import though, and i'd be wanting to see documentation to support the mileage, along with a good service history.

The 1.6 is actually better than the 1.9 in some ways. It is less nose heavy due to the lighter engine and therefore more nimble.

Yeah i red that in a few 205 reviews

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,680 ✭✭✭mondeo

If your getting a 205gti get a proper 1.9 one...I would not be bothered with the 1.6.. A uk import would be of more interest to me. get it checked before you buy and you will be ok. 205 gti's over here are over priced and are usually the less interesting 1.6 models...

    Do you not like red?
This is alot of car for circa €900+VRT, quite some work already carried out, already addressed the rust issue & you are definetely not being screwed on price. (would love to buy myself but the boss would insist on something going) :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

I'd still be looking for a decent service history. Its that sort of car that has to be looked after or it will go to the dogs.

Good service history or walk away. Or buy the bulletproof mk2 golf gti..... :)

Yea 1.9s are rare in this country alright and most are in poor condition
Just asking about the lad who suggested getting one from england do u know any specialised dealer over there.
