Starter motor question..

Starter motor has a connection to the + on battery and - is connected (earthed) to the engine itself. Theres no - connection back to the starter motor. Should there be one?

Every now and then it won't start at all - no power what so ever. If i put a screw driver between the + cable and the engine block with ignition on it kicks over and then when i go to start it by ignition again it turns over fine..

Is this an earth problem. Either a bad connection to engine block or do i need to route - cable back to starter?

No. The battery -12VDC is connected to the chassis/engine. Basically anything metal on you car is -12VDC. There is no need for -12VDC in this instance.

Sounds weird - basically you are short circuiting the battery - could be quite dangerous.

Check all earth straps from the battery to the engine and chassis. If necessary, remove them and clean them with fine sandpaper. Your problem maybe a sticky solenoid on your starter.

I presume you mean between the + terminal on the starter and the engine?
The starter relay/solenoid is sticking (small round bit on the top of the starter) you can replace them. BTW the screwdriver method is well known in farming circles, half the tractors in the country are started that way;)

Sounds like the solenoid is fecked, most starters on modern cars

have them attached to them, you might be able to get it

re-conditioned, or chance buying a starter second from a breakers.
