Everytime I turn on my computer, messenger pops up. Can't see this programme in the remove-progs-list. Already removed msn from the list, any suggestions?

Also, anyone know what J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 update 6 is? It has 119mb on my pc and I wanted to remove it, but unsure of its importance.

Which Windows? There's a reg change which shows hidden items such as Messenger if you want to remove it.

And you can remove the J2SE runtime so long as you never intend to use anything Java related.

    There's a J2SE runtime thingy version 11 taking up 120mbs, can I ditch the version 6.

    It's Windows XP home edition

Remove both and the go to www.java.com and download the version 13 which is the latest, either the offline version installer or the online, doesn't matter which. BTW Java won't be causing those pop-ups, when was the last time the machine had security updates from M$ installed? More likely that is the issue.

Couple of methods here to remove messenger.

http://raproducts.org/ <-JavaRa - available there - can automatically remove outdated versions of the JRE, and check for newer versions.

Be aware that there are a few badly coded programs around which rely on old versions of java to run, though funnily enough they aren't very common outside of the corporate environment :pac:

Regarding messenger, just let it start up, open up its Options, and uncheck Start Messenger when computer starts or something similarly worded. You can uninstall it completely if you really want to - http://www.google.com/search?q=uninstall+messenger
