UK delivery to Ireland - Help?

Quick question fellows, I know this forum is not the best place for this thread but seeing as alot of people here dabble in the import/export trade it is where I think people with answers may be found!

Anyway some people may say I am gone a bit insane:eek: but I am thinking of buying an offroad ATV as opposed to the ubiquitous quad bike found on every second Irish farm. I can get this in the UK for good enough money but bringing it back to Ireland is the snag. I can fly over for around 2cents compliments of Mick O'Leary but I doubt if it would fit in my overhead locker:D

People here may have brought back engines or gearboxes from the UK so I was wondering who would be good for delivery to Ireland? It would probably be able to fit on a large pallet or else I could organise a timber crate and lots of Styrofoam.

The thing is I could collect it myself but by the time I had a friends Van borrowed and with temporary insurance (maybe free) changed over from my car plus the €350 to €450 return ferry fare paid and around €100 of Diesel plus €50/bottle of Whiskey to my mate for taking his van for the weekend it would quickly run up to 6 or 7 hundred euro.

Surely there must be a transport company specialising in this but I just don't know where to look? A friend of mine got a load of car parts down from Derry for €30 complete with a large timber crate to keep but this company only operates on the Island of Ireland apparently.

Alternatively is there a Van-Rental that operates cross border? so I could hire a van in the UK and drop it off at their Irish depot, which may work out cheaper than the go and collect it myself option as my ferry would be one way.

There are a couple of points to make here.

If you buy it new, it may be subject to VAT when you import it, and depending on how the VRO office look at it, they may classify it as a motorcycle and want VRT.
I can't comment any further other than to say I was in a similar situation. As long as you insist that it is an off-road only vehicle, you should be able to avoid VRT.

Secondly, I do not know if you have driven one of those, but I would think twice about it.
I have 3 Quads, all big Honda 4x4's, and while the 6 and 8 wheelers can float across deep rivers, the quads will go anywhere they can go, quicker, and much more comfortably. For example my Honda 700 has a theoretical top speed of 60 mph (not practical I know, but when you are on smooth terrain, it is great to be able to cruise along at 30 to 40 mph).
