Change of Ownership problem

    Hi,

I bought a car privately a couple of weeks ago. All the seller gave me was a blank Section B of the Vehicle Licensing Cert, which she signed and I filled in my details and sent it off to the Dept. of Transport in Shannon. This was over a week and a half ago when I sent it in and I still haven't heard anything back from them. I'm starting to get worried because I used the PSE lookup tool on motortax.ie - https://www.motortax.ie/PSE/start.do?page=welcome - and it says no change of ownership requests have been made in the last 3 months.

I tried ringing them but I was on hold for ages and gave up :(

Anyone know how long it usually takes for this? Any other advice would be very helpful...

relax ...... they are usually slow in processing applications - wait another few days...its normal.

2-3 weeks isnt uncommon for these to be processed.

can take up to 5 weeks at certain times of the year.

    holy cr@p! really?!!!

There's a recorded message saying that they process them within 2 days of receiving the form. That's what had me worried. But if you reckon its normal to take longer that puts my mind at ease a bit. Any ideas if they'll be able to confirm they received it if you ring them? (that's if I ever get through to them!!)

another quick question... it was the first time I've bought a car off someone and all she gave me was section B of that Licensing Cert (the bit I sent away). Was there anything else I should have gotten from her?

I also think they only answer phones up to lunch time or something silly like that. But yes, this can take several weeks to get.

its really annoying because theres no way I can get my tax sorted until that bit is sorted :(:(:(

silly question but does it cost anything to change ownership details? I didnt include payment because it didnt mention it anywhere. What do they actually send you out when it is changed - is it a new Vehicle Licensing Cert.

Was the lady I bought the car off right to keep the rest of her V.L.C. (except Section b)?

    Don't worry about it.

No, it is free, and you get a brand spanking new VLC with your details on it after a few weeks. (2 days is just them being very optimistic:))

Not really, she should have kept it all together. It doesn't matter too much as the reg number is on section B too. The best way to handle the VLC is that you both (seller & buyer) fill out your respective sections and then post it together, so there is no 'confusion' afterwards.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

I wouldn't worry about it. I would call Shannon and they'll tell you if they've received it...just hang on the line until you get them.

Worst case scenario is that the seller doesn't send in the forms then all you have to do is get a one pager from Shannon and ask your solicitor to witness it saying you bought the car. You'll need to go to a dealer as well to get the chassis number confirmed on the form. The tax office deal with this all the time and they're pretty good and quick with it. Possession is 9/10ths and all that...anyhow, any speeding tickets or M50 toll charges will go to previous owner untill your details are on the car!!

I know all of this cos I had to deal with precisely this situation having bought a car from a "reputable dealer" based in Dublin who sells high performance cars. Enough said. A car dealer is a car dealer is a car dealer etc..!!
