Hey, want to find out my body fat percentage so I know how much protein I should eating on this calorie deficit diet. I'm 200lbs and I hear 1g/lb per pound of weight or per pound of lean body mass, I'm going with the second one because 200grams a day of protein is very hard! Bought electronic body fat callipers recommended by g'em but the measurements are all over the shop. So could any take a guess on my bf?

Weight on scales in morning: 200lbs
    Height: 5'10"

its impossible to tell without a shoe

you need to make another pic with you holding a shoe

this will give an exact figure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭amazingemmet

Definitely over twenty possibly pushing 25%

You need to hold your shoe up to the camera and then we can give you a more accurate measure

Just out of interest, how many people on here follow this rule of thumb? I've been told by alot of people that it's just a money making ploy for the protein companies so you'll get through your tubs quicker!

I find in my own experience 1 shake after training is fine with my diet for maintenance & if I wanna stack on weight I just add a shake in the morning over a period of time! Anymore then this and I just get sick of protein shakes quickly!

thats a nice camera. I need one of those.

The shoe thing is just funny sh1t!.

There is no way in the world you are anywhere near 20% body fat (tested with calipers i would say 16-17% absolute max). Overall it does not matter which way you test is so long as you kep using the same method to retest.

Most gyms/trainers will test your body fat for free so drop in a get one done (if they are NOT doing this then do not use them as trainers as they bloody should be testing)

You are terrible at guestimating body fat, thats for sure, and going by that i'd say your just as terrible at doing body fat tests.

Hit up the weights hard my man and clean up your diet! What are your eating habits like right now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,751 ✭✭✭MyPeopleDrankTheSoup

Pretty good for last 2 weeks. Been that weight since I did lipotrim this time last year, since then I've lost nothing else or put on much muscle. I've gone on daycent calorie deficit for a week then lose interest, but been going good for 2 weeks now and can feel real long term discipline here, not the short term discipline I had for the 3 weeks of lipotrim.

    Diet

Boiled Egg, slice of wholemeal bread/Omolette/Fried Egg/Scrambled Egg

Steak, chicken breast, beans, peas, 3 or 4 mcdonalds hamburgers without buns or dressing (gonna get abused on that one I say...), 1 spud

    Redskin peanuts
    Orange
    Glenisk low fat yoghurt

    Tin of sunflower oil Tuna

That's roughly my day to day diet for last 2 weeks. Weights 4 or 5 times a week, only do cardio day of or after a few pints.

Trying to incorporate whey protein lately as well but taste putting me off. Basically eating the same foods I have for past year but way less portions

This is a simple version mate im just being harsh but true, alot of these guys in here get way to technical keep it simple. **** measuring your bmi with a ****ing show or whatever. Your out of shape you know it I know ive been there im not now!

Just sweat your ass off basically. Run, cycle, row, step machine, then toning, as in weights for your upper body from chest abs arms and most importanly legs and back(ask your gym instructor for a routine dont invent your own) also play some type of sport like football so you dont get to board. Then swim, watch what you eat and cut out the drink!

And do this at least 3 times a week or theres no point. Oh and you will feel like ****e but you will see the changes and somedays you wont want to go if esp if you have been working all day. My advice is get the mp3 player out put on a bit of hard house or scooter "move your ass" drink a cup of strong coffe and honey and get to the gym!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how many body fat tests do you do with calipers daily exactly???

The only way to really know is for him to get bloody tested and as i said it really does not matter a dam which way you test it so long as your going down

Diet looks like the first port of call for you. The words "McDonalds Hamburger" and "good diet" don't go together - clearly you know this if you were expectin abuse. Also, you while eggs are good, frying them isn't the best way to cook them.

I would say you are possibly eating too little, which will just slow down your metabolism. You should eat more regularly but more smartly - cut out the mcdonalds burgers and swap for chicken, fish etc. have more vegetables (fresh veg mind) and add in a second meal in the evening. As long as its clean healthy food it won't do too much damage.

Can I ask, WTF is the point in buying hamburgers in McDonalds then getting rid of bun etc? That is beyond pointless to me.

Oh, and tbh I would have said he was about 18/19% BF.

there is nothing wrong with frying eggs its the same as scrambling them or making an omellette accept you just dont mix them around. the problem is if he is throwing in hunks of butter to stop them sticking to the pan but if he is doing that for the fried eggs he is probably doing it for the omellete and the scrambled too

frying pan + little olive oil = no problem

I dont believe in caliper testing due to human error been way to much a factor in testing, you simply asked that question because you would have read me saying that over and over! your question means nothing.

I also know its an easy tool to use to lie to clients, as you could easily take bullshiit measurements to tell them there doing better than they are etc..

yeah, just olive oil, hate butter. mcdonalds burgers only every know and then, and when i do i make sure i'm always in calorie deficit. just make sure i get a good bit of protein and deficit every day and it seems to be working so far, after the 8lbs of water weight lost in the first week, i seem to be losing weight slowly which i'm hoping is fat.

Yes i do and if there used in the right way and consistant then there a good tool, most people use them wrong, also Measuring tape, and tell my clients to use the mirror and the best indicator, there clothes and lastly weight can be used along with all this obviously.

Calipers are not a good tool, too invasive and hard to use on very thin or fat people, and as i stated already the element of human error is there worst problem. even when done well accuracy is more dependent on a person's unique body fat distribution also, and as we know everyone has unique areas that they store fat as opposed to the common sites which are used to do skin fold testing so you could store lots of fat in an area that is not in the testing formula and it wont count.

BIA tools need the correct info put into them and need to be done with consistency, time, before food ideally, not while dehydrated and most people hold them wrong which straight away ruins the accuracy.

now why the feck would anyone lie to a client???

Also, i totally agree calipers are dependent on the person taking them and as i said already it does not matter if you use a tape measure (which i also use), claipers or scales so long as there is progress.

Overall though i would never use a BIA method as i have gotten used to calipers (of which the individual measurements are more important than the %).

Finally a total % is based on a number of sites NOT just the stomach so just because someone stores lots of fat in the stomach does not mean the overall % is really high. To be over 20% the guy would have a good set of moobs on him and farily thick thighs.

The same could be said about the claipers. I have a slimguide calipers which has a spring, so tension is the same each time, i.e. no squeezing to make me seem like I am losing more fat.
    cowzerp wrote: »

I don't bother with forumlas, just measure various areas and track if they are getting bigger or smaller. Some forumlas gave me high readings, some really low. I also would have guessed the OP was under 20%, as that is what I have seen with myself. Now if I had only used a BIA device that said 22% when I looked like that then thats what I would have guessed! I would be none the wiser as to which was really correct.

Without been smart-so they dont lose them as clients when there not getting results, wrong but i never realised that been a personal trainer made you trust worthy.

some PT's could lie, anyway we all said our points. and i answered your questions for you.

being a GOOD personal trainer is one that gets bloody results and that is shown on the calipers, tape, clothes.

I would not have worked for over 10years as a trainer if i was only interested in keeping clients that are not making progress.

I really do not care how distrustful trainers opperate as the ones i work with and know are getting great results with clients (i can see this with my own eyes) and yes thay ALL use calipers.

Now why would charles poliquin (a very well respected trainer) run an entire week course on testing body fat all using a calipers in order to improve and understand fat testing? Do you think HE is discussing lying to clients and recommending an electronic scales?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 698 ✭✭✭Vampireskiss

I agree with transform that he looks 16 to 17 % bodyfat he is quite slim in terms of normal every day standards and he hasn't got a belly sticking out or manboobs.

Also no caliper bodyfat testing method is not 100% acurate especially if you get a different person to do the measurements whats important is to get the same person every time that way you have the same error if there is one but you can track the trend. It does not matter what your true BF% is what matters is that its going down

I think the best method for tracking progress is just get a simple tape meaure and measure your waist around your belly button every few weeks if you making progress that measurement will be going down
