Unemployment rate just 6%

    Had discussion with a friend who's recently made redundant and who was bemoaning the fact that 10.5% of people are unemployed and that all news is bad etc.

    So I've decieded to massage the figures in a positive way to counteract the negative massaging of things by the media.

    In 2005 / 2006 when Ireland was in effective full employment (anyone who wanted a job could get one) the official unemployment rate was 4.5%. Therefore 4.5% of the jobseeker figure are people who have no interest in work, thus the real figure for jobseekers looking for work is 6% - still bad, but sounds a lot better.

    there are plenty of employed people who have no interest in work. More of them than there are unemployed people who do have an interest in work. Therefore the actual employment rate is 140%. hurray!

    most of that 4.5% were short term unemployed - i.e between jobs
    only a tiny amount were long term unemployed

    the long term unemployment rate stood at 1.4% unchanged from Q2 2004;

    there ya go - a source to back it up. Mid boom (2004) long term unemployed was 1.4%

    aint no way you can spin thousands of jobs lost per week as "positive"

    This thread should be closed because the OP is stating complete lies. Please get your facts right, you sound like a Fianna Fail hack.

    Don't forget that the unemployment rate is rising: this means people are becoming unemployed faster than jobs can be created, so it's just getting harder to find a job with every week that goes by.

    There's no point in manipulating figures in silly ways like this. If people are sick of 'bemoaning' they would be far better off taking a genuinely positive outlook on the future rather than resorting to token positivity.

    OP look up the definition of "full-employment" and get back to us.

    That letter is very good and it's happening all over the place. Theres absolutely no incentive to go out to work considering the income you can get on social welfare.

    Its mainly cause he has 4 kids. Govt gives support for that whether in work or not.

    And the end of the letter makes no sense. If they tax child benifit , then your man's sw income will go down , so more incentive to get a job.

    still thankfully 4 kids isn't so common these days.
