Strange Driver Problem - Help Please

So yesterday I discover our PC is refusing to play sound. We're running Windows XP, fully updated and with AVG anti-virus. It's most unusual though. When the PC is first started everything appears to work fine. For example, if I launch a PC game I can play for hours with sound no problem, but for some reason the second attempt to use sound will cause the drivers to become corrupted/vanished/or not recognised in some way. Like, listening to music on Windows Media Players works, but if you close it and start it again the drivers appear to have vanished. Similarily, Dxdiag will work fine if it's the first program to be run, but afterwards it will claim there's no sound driver installed.

We have an Audigy 2 ZS by the way. I have tried the following to correct the problem, to no avail:

    - 'Repair' installation of the drivers.
    - Uninstall/fresh install of the drivers.
    - System Restore to several days ago.
    - Registry Cleanup Utility followed by fresh install of the drivers.

We also get an error message at start up saying that Generic Host Process has crashed, and sometimes windows will announce that it has recovered from a system fault. The drivers we've been using had been operating fine for years until this occured. Finally, the problem seemed to trigger when I attached an old Zen music player to the PC. It didn't show up, and when I tried to open My Computer it took a very long time to load, but otherwise it seemed like nothing else had occurred. Possibly a coincidence, I don't know.

I'd really rather not have to format and reinstall windows so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
