Getting married on the QT - is it possible?

We were hoping to get married in a registry office sometime this year. Nothing fussy, no parents or anything. Just making our current situation legal. Anyway, we started looking into it, and it turns out that you have to have 2 witnesses and give their names and DOB's when you meet the registrar before the 3 month wait.

This means that we will have to ask these 2 people before we give their names.... then the 'cat will be out of the bag' :o. All it takes is for one person to know and you know the rest.

Other than hitting Las Vegas, does anyone know any other way around this, or have you managed to do it quietly?

Could you not decide 2 people you know would be there without a doubt and then tell them just a week before?

I know if my brother came to me and said 'rach i'm getting married on friday and I need you there' i would drop everything to be there for him.

Mind I dont think he'll be getting married anytime soon!

Not really, I guess ideally one would have to come from over seas and the other is married and they would probably tell their other half. There isn't anyone we could drop that request on in really short notice! We're not 25 anymore so everyone we know has commitments elsewhere.

but if you are keeping it low key then its a lot of fuss for someone to come from overseas. But anyway, aside from that, you just need their names and DOB's on the forms when you are applying. You don't need anymore from them. And AFAIk (but I could be wrong) they can be changed up to a short time before the wedding (a friend was due to have someone as a witness, but they broke their leg and couldn't come from England. They only knew this 2 weeks before the wedding, and they informed the registrar and that was fine they just changed the witness for someone else. This may have been a special case though due to the emergency broken leg).

ring the registry office - they are so nice and helpful. They will tell you your options in regards to the witnesses. I think you can even get staff members of the registry office to act as witnesses, so if that were the case, just list two of the staff on the form and have them on the day!

Good luck and best wishes for your marriage
