i have one and they are very good if you eat out a lot.....
however some restaurants only let you use the card once.....(these are in the minority though)

    Not a scam.
Its been around a few years. Its very big in the uk than here. It used to cost €99 for the year. Some restaurants will allow one use only, they will mark the number out on the back of the card.

You can get a one month trial, to see if you like it. I had one on trial and found that some restaurants were not aware of card

I had one last year. Great value. I found that only one restaurant let me use it more than once though. Still great value though.

Most restaurants during the recession and all would probably say they aren't aware of the card or only allow it to be used once.

how does this work? the website doesnt explain it fully...

if you buy 2 meals you get the cheapest free? what about drinks with the meal? or if you have starters and deserts also, does this only cover 1 free main course?

thinking of gettin this as a birthday present for my dad...thanks

It depends on the restaurant. You get a book which tells you what you can get in each restaurant. Usually you can get up to 3 courses for free.

If you buy 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 deserts, you get the cheapest of each type of course free.

Drink is not included in the offer.

Most restaurants dont accept the card on certain days like valentines day. Some are only monday to thursday etc. Its all in the book you get.

but doesnt it say that there is no restrictions on when it can be used.
It also doesnt mention that u can only use it once in certain restaurants

Also a lot of restaurants wont accept the card unless booked in advance and tell them you have the card.

A lot staff dont know the restaurant is part of the hi-life scheme. Also i advise bringing the book to the restaurant to provide proof of what your entitled too because some places you are entitled too 3courses free when buying 3. The amount of times they try to get out of it by saying no its only the main course free is unreal!

    Davy
Would you recommend getting one so

If you eat out quite a bit and are not shy about getting what the offer states you are entitled too then yes i would.

Just its not a perfect setup. I think the company needs to make the restaurants more aware of the full details of the card. Each restaurant should have a sticker or sign at the door also imo.

I usually go into the restaurant and ask if they have a table free. Then I mention the card and ask if 3 courses are covered. Sometimes they know straight off and sometimes they have to go and ask a manager. For a little hassel you can save a lot of money. You can break even after your first meal and then you'll have all year to save a lot of money. Plenty of restaurants to get through.

I got the card last year and my girlfriend got it this year. I wouldnt go to some of the restaurants again but there are some gems. There're some new restaurants on it now and they seem to be owned by the same person. They're very picky and I wouldn't go to any of them again.

If you have an issue with a restaurant send an email or call the high life people. A well know restaurant on stephens green was taken off the list because of complaints from people.

Well the last time i contacted them with a problem they said to me if you have a problem you should settle it with the restaurant manager yourself. I got the impression they didnt really care but maybe it was the person i happened to be dealing with.

In the case I mentioned they sent out a letter stating that the restaurant was no longer included in the high life scheme due to complaints from card holders or something to that effect. I had nothing to do with the complaints myself and have not had any need to contact them. Maybe the person you were in contact with was having a bad day or maybe they're always like that.

Best thing to do is just ask up front. If your're not happy, leave and go to another restaurant on the list. Plenty of them around Dublin. I still love the card.

It can be a bit of hassle when it comes to the bill, if the restaurant states that only main couses are covered you will need to argue your case in the restaurant, which can take away from a good night. Voices carry a lot in restaurants. As some other posters have said some restaurants will try to claim on valid on certain nights

I had one on trial and to be honest I didnt opt for it because of the hassle, bear in mind there are a lotta of v good early bird/set menus out there at moment

To get one on trial ring up their head office, they will give u one on trial for one month, you give em your credit card number, if you cancel within one month no charge.

Has anyone tried to use an Irish card in England? I know there's a lot of places in Manchester which I visit a bit, I'm wondering would a card bought here work there.

We use the card all the time.
There was a free one for 6 months as an offer during the summer and a VIP one for a tenner at the time.

in Milanos, where we eat a lot, we get one course free i.e. a pizza.
In milanos last week, used the special lunch menu and the card didn't apply.
Still though, have saved a load with this card.
