Looking for advice on what to get for my son. He is taking guitar lessons and is mad to get his own electric guitar. I haven't a clue what to look for and really do not want to spend too much. Is it possible to get a second hand started pack?

Really depends on the style of music he's into. What sort of bands does he like?

Look for the love of god, Do NOT get an SX electric guitar. If you go to waltons they will push you towards it, i have one cause i got it as my first guitar and i thought that it was supposed to feel difficult to play because it was an electric, i then bought a much better electric guitar for €300 (the SX costs €200 btw with an amp and stuff) I realised very quickly after playing a much better guitar that the SX is pure crap, everything about it is terrible. You would be best bringing him in and letting him have a good feel for all different guitars and please get him to spend a good while to get a feel for which is best for him because i promise you if he gets the SX he will go nowhere fast, it took me months to start learning proper stuff on it and then i got the Aria (the €300 guitar) and wow i flew it's made a big difference. Don't be swayed by these 'Deals' which have guitar, amp, lead and watever else thrown cause the guitar is probably worth at the most €150 and the amp €30, you are better off getting guitar, amp, lead, strap, plecs seperate.

This one was recommended. they also have an Volcano starter pack and the guy said it is not a good one which is reflected in the price €149.

It is just that it is a lot of money to spend on an 8yr old. Ideally a second hand one would be good. Is this one in the link a good starter one?

It looks good but might even get it cheaper on ebay and still brand new

Yamaha Pacifica and a Roland Microcube.

I agree. I just made the text a little more noticible to get the message across. :pac:

Here are some links to the guitar and amp mentioned above.

http://www.thomann.de/ie/yamaha_pacifica_112v_rbr.htm (many colours available, just change the quick selection box above the guitar).

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/roland_micro_cube_ltd_red.htm

Also, he'll need a lead, strap and picks... but this doesn't cost very much at all. If you buy the amp and guitar in a store they may throw these few accessories in if you ask nicely. ;)

The starter packs are usually a very cheaply made guitar and a very small not very nice sounding amp (which may not last long) and a few accessories. You're mostly paying for the convenience of getting it all together. I wouldn't suggest buying one.

If you buy a guitar like the Yamaha I linked to above, it will be much better and something he can hopefully use for years to come and upgrade as he needs to. These are solid base to work with. As for the amp, I have that exact one I linked to and I love it. Well worth the money, and many others here will agree.

Well, my experience with a budget instrument from that brand hasn't been good.
I swear one of their basses that I owned had a neck made of cheese. Very unstable.

But, just to say it again... for you and others that may be reading.
    Steer clear of "starter packs".

Would a smaller guitar not be better off for an 8 year old??? Yeh.....
3/4 size or something. At 8 years old i would not be worried about buying a Yamaha Pacifica, that would be the choice for beginners.

Ahh sure he'll grow into it! :pac:
Thats what I was told when I was given a full scale dreadnought bodied yamaha acoustic when I was 10.

Feckin' thing was massive to me! :o

    +1

I'd also like to +1 the Yamaha Pacifica suggestion

In terms of size the person playing it should be able to hold the headstock with a slight bend in their arm, can be hard to size some stuff online but 3/4 would sound right for an 8 year old but it also depends on height etc so a full size could do.

The Cort trailblazer packs are quite good aswell.
