NCT for UK import - do I get notified?

    Hello,

Just a bit worried with the recent announcement of crack downs on non NCT'd cars.

I bought a mini last year (march 2008) which had been inported from Northern Ireland and was registered in the Republic in July 2007 - it is a 2004 car. So my reg is 04 D and I completed all the paperwork to confirm that I am the owner.

My question is should I wait to hear from the NCT to tell me I am due to do a test or do I now have to contact them and book it in - technically would my car have been due an NCT in July 2008 when it was 4 years old or does it work slightly differently if the car technically has two dates of registration - its actual first registration in the Uk and then its second registration in the republic.

I don't want to get penalised next month because I waited around to be notified by the NCT.
    Thanks

The NCT don't notify any one when their test is due. It is up to everyone to arrange themselves.

just go onto www.ncts.ie and enter your car reg number and the first date of registration from the VLC form and bobs your uncle, you can book your NCT there and then at a location and time that suits you.

They only send out reminders when they feel like it, it seems. They stopped doing them for a good while. I only got one in the post several months after mine was due (the test centre was fully booked for ages)

Did they suggest a location for you? Maybe when test centre is not so busy they try to 'drum up business' ?

My NCT was expired for long time & I never received a notification.

Don't wait for them. My gf recently registered her car here when she moved from NI (also a '04). When she rang NCTS to book the test she was told that she has to contact the revenue in Shannon to ask them to send the details to NCTS!!

I would have assumed that this is an automatic process but then assumption is the mother of all f*** ups :)

NCTS have lost the contract for the NCT, they don't give a flying f**k about the NCT at the moment so don't expect reminders or any decent service for now.

    From the NCT Website:

Due to the recent announcement, NCTS are currently experiencing an unprecedented demand in the number of people requesting a booking. Please be aware that our Call Centre is fully operational however, you may experience problems getting through to us and this is purely down to the volume of people trying to contact us, we do ask that you bear with us on this and that you keep trying.

NCTS do endeavour to contact as many car owners as possible and from the 1st January this year we have sent over 247,000 notifications regarding their NCT however, it should be noted that in some instances such as, change of ownership of the vehicle, if the vehicle is off the road or if the vehicle is out of tax that can affect whether a letter is issued for that vehicle. Therefore, we would encourage customers who have not heard from the NCT but feel their car is eligible for the NCT to contact us directly and we will arrange an NCT for them.

I got a reminder in January too - and got the car booked in and done within a week... Fonthill centre.

NCTS have not lost the contract for the NCT. The company who run the NCT namely SGS http://www.sgs.com/ have lost the contract to manage the NCT. The new company who will take over the running of NCT are Applus http://www.applusrtd.com/html/standaard/en-GB/pages/default/Our_profile.html. Basically the NCT will be the same as before except under new management. This changeover will begin in January 2010.

Absolute lies. My car, my parents cars and at least two of my friends cars don't meet those conditions, and none of us have received anything from the NCT in the last 3 years. Another friends car should be due its first NCT this year - I'm curious whether he'll get any notification.

thanks everyone for the replies. I hadn't assumed I would just hear, I have actually been reminded in the past with other cars - the reminder usually came with my tax renewal form so that's why I was wondering why I hadn't heard anything since technically I assumed my NCT has been due since last July and I thought maybe there was a different process since it was originally a NI car.

I'll just get on the case myself so and book it in. Just hope that the revenue has updated the NCT records, thanks for the heads up.

    cheers.
