I did some initial calculations and think that i overpaid tax lat year, between about 4 employers my tax credit were all over the place and i was emergency taxed a good bit.

whats the best way of trying to get this money back, i dont mind paying an agency if they do all the paperwork...... its not much now, maybe a grand or so....

Call up your local tax office and tell them you want a balancing statement for 2008. That'll tell you what you're due back and then they'll send a cheque out to you. It's fairly straight forward and they'll ask you any questions they need to complete it.

If you are just talking irish PAYE, then just ask for a balancing statement for the year in question, revenue will do the math and give you a cheque.

Once your income is employer based i.e paye employment a P21 or balancing statement is what you need to request from revenue.
If you had 4 employers last year and your credits were all over the place make sure you have your P45s from your employers incase Revenue need this detail. They should receive the employers copy of it (P35) however things never work that smoothly. The reason your tax was all over the place was because P45s were not issued/given to new employer or Revenue did not have you registered as working with a new employer.

When you get your balancing statement have a look at the credits you are claiming. Then look at the revenue website and see if there are any other credits that you feel you may be entitled to. You can asked revenue over the phone when you request the statement but its always a good idea to check the statement when you receive to make sure.

Its easily sorted and there certainly is no need to pay any agency to do it for you. Revenue are there as a public service so use them!:)
