I’m looking at a couple of TVs here at the moment both are around a grand and one is LCD and the other Plasma. LG/Sam

Which is the better TV for this size? I heard before that the plasma is better when going over 42'? Taking into account the price of each here Im kind of thinking the same as Im sure if you spend 4k on a 47' LCD it would be better quality but at this price am i better to go for the 50' plasma?

Also am I gonna have a huge hike in my power bill compared to a 37' LCD?

Haven't seen great reviews on LG's to be honest. The new panasonic g10 is supposed to be super, check out reviews of that here.

In meantime here are some reviews on lots of tv's sized 40-49" to read to help you make up you're mind.

Most reviews will give some comment on power usage.

I have an LG plasma 42inch, Its very hard on power and the picture is not as clear as an LCD. I love it to bits but I think an LCD is the way to go

Totally dis-agree with that. At bigger resolutions, Plasma is far better than LCD.
In Tallon's case LG make shockingly bad Plamsa TVs.

I'd only pay money for a Panasonic or Pioneer panel, rest are sub-standard IMO.

Have you fed it a proper HD signal?

I have a 50" Panasonic with integrated HD capable satellite tuner. The picture quality from the HD satellite channels is stunning. Normal resolution satellite channels are brilliant also. Terrestrial channels like RTE are nothing to write home about, but that is not the sets fault.

The power consumption is higher than LCD's, but that is mostly is emitted as heat. Since we have to actively heat our homes for most of the year anyway, It is not like the small amount extra spent on producing that heat is going to waste. If we lived in a hot climate, then it would be an issue.

Never thought of it that way tbh.:)

Seriously though, i think it can still come down to personal preference. I bought a 40" 1080p samsung a few months ago and the only reason i bought it over, say a Panasonic 42pz80 is because i t was going to be my main gaming tv. I just dont like gaming on a plasma. That said, normal tv is great too on the samsung. Now that i have a gaming tv, though, any other tvs for the house will almost certainly be plasma because they will only be used for tv.

You bought a slow response LCD for gaming over a near instantaneous response Plasma?

Each to their own I suppose.

    I use a 50" Plasma for gaming - FTW.

Dont worry, i use vga and i dont think i'm all that affected by input lag anyway. The trends in input lag are becoming a bit worrying for LCD's alright though. e.g, Sonys w4000 series last year was almost without lag but in this years W5500 theres a bit of it alright. Samsung have gotten worse as well. On the other hand, panasonics new G10 range seems to be lagless, and theyve brought power consumption down. Very clearly the best set(The 42g10 that is) at the moment then for around one thousand euro

Guys, thought this thread would be a good place for this question... a related querie.

I'm also in the market for a big screen around 50" and the 1k mark. Difference being that this is to be used with a pc for presentations and skype. It's also needed pretty quickly, so will have to be store bought.

I've had a look around and have narrowed it to a Samsung 50" plasma (PS50B451) or an LG 47" LCD (47LG7000). I had seen pixmania offering a Sharp 52" LCD (LC-52DH65E) for about 1200, but the delivery would take too long for me.

Should I go with the 47" LCD because of the worry of pixel burn? Or is that no longer an issue on newer sets?

If anyone knows of another set I should be looking at for similar money in Cork I'd appreciate any input.

    Thanks.

To be honest 515, i wouldnt be getting a 720p tv like the samsung at this size if PC use is going to be one of its main uses. Also, screenburn does still seem to be a issue even on the latest samsung plasma's so i reckon you should avoid that one for those two reasons.

The LG, for PC use anyway would be better for PC use because its 1080p, as well as an LCD which are naturally better for PC use anyway. That said, for around that price there are better tvs available for general use, even in stores. E.G, I saw an ad in the examiner on saturday for soundstore. They were advertising a 46" full HD 1080p panasonic plasma for 999E. For everyday use, for sure this would be miles ahead of the LG and screenburn probably would'nt be an issue either. That said, many people would tell you that plasma's really are'nt suited for PC use. Not so sure about this myself but if PC use was going to be the ONLY use of the TV, LCD is probably the technology to go for.

Thanks Zonda, yeah I think LCD is the way to go... I'd love to get that 52" Sharp from pixmania, would just cut it too close on time. Looks like 47" might be the best I'll get in store though.

Yeah i think so too to be brutally honest. That said, i reckon even around the 47" size you could probably do better than an LG at that size, if you're prepared to look around a little. The 7000 series LG are'nt too bad a set though. They have 100Hz and bluetooth i think. Where can you get that for 1200E anyway? I'm guessing Currys?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 150 ✭✭515

1050 and how did you guess?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

I guess to be fair, 1050E aint too bad a price for a 47" 100Hz 1080p set. I would haggle them to give to ya for a grand, though

I knew it was Currys because i think the 7000 series LG sets are exclusive to them:)

I'll probably go with that alright, maybe one last phone around this morning. thanks for the advice.

Was a display model, so got it for under 950... looks great with the pc on it. Happy.
