You either work 4 days that week,
or work 5 days and get paid for 6
or get a day off within a month of the bank holiday.

Your entitled to 20% of your working week payment for the b/h so 1 days pay.

I read somewhere that you are only legally entitled to public holidays off as opposed to bank holidays-would this make any difference?

You are entitled to a day off in lieu or to be paid bank holiday rates for the day.

This is the correct answer, usually bank holiday and public holiday is the same but there are exceptions such as Good Friday.
