Even cheaper Se mics are nice enough, in time I think they will be in every large studio.

It would be interesting to put it through it's paces.

I thought you guys sold the sE stuff Paul, can you not get your hands on one and tell us what you think of them? Seem an interesting product, whats the pricepoint? My concern would be that it's a Neve name cash in without a Neve sound quality. Be interesting to hear what it sounds like...

Yikes. Over 2k pricetag. It'd need to be pretty bloody fantastic for that price...

Indeed we do. They're only starting to ship so I've not have a goo yet. The story is sE designed the ribbon whilst my old China Plate, Rupe designed the electronics.

I don't know much more than that!

I've heard great things about this mic. But I'm really happy with what I have, so it'd want to be unbelievable for me to fork out that much.

    Anyone else any observations?

IMO it's typical latter day Neve snake oil marketing.

If you want more top end on most ribbon mics, you can just do a shelving boost. For example, the roll off of the Coles is pretty much the same shape as a standard shelf, so cranking up the top end does not give the usual brittle/ phasey side effects of a dynamic or a condenser.

Then there's the Beyerdynamic ribbons- they're already quite bright sounding.

It's unfortunate that Rupert Neve is wheeled out as a brand name at every opportunity. I reckon he could do a nice line in t-shirts. But his designs are the dogs bollocko.

Neve say's you can flatten out the response between 16kHz and 25kHz, I presume that's his input in the design. He's always banging on about that high frequency thing. The 9098 mic amps go way up to 100khz or something daft like that. What's the high end stop at on a decent hi-fi system I wonder? I know the BBC at one stage only had a bandwidth of 15kHz.

All the same. I'd say it's a cracker of a mic. Ribbon microphones have a nicer transient response than any others and I think if it has a top end like a good condenser mic it'll be very nice.

Although I'm fond of the narrowness of the figure 8 pattern. I think it would have been possible to give it a cardioid or a hyper cardioid pattern especially when you consider the apparent level of sophistication in the electronic end of the design.

I think it's good to see SE getting stuck in with a serious top end mic and giving Mr. Siwei Zou a chance to really do his thing in terms of design at higher price point too.

I have no doubt that this will be a great product. I have the Se gemeni and the Neve Portico and both products I couldn't live without so to think that they are working together makes total sense. Thumbs up to this is my view.

James Young MD from sE mics will be in Dublin shortly and we're talking of organising a SHOOTOUT evening where we can compare your (or the studios) own mics to sEs.

Date to be confirmed, should be fun!

That would definitely be a worthwhile exercise Paul, certainly one I'd be interested in attending...

I see the the SE/Rupert Neve ribbon mic is reviewed in your favourite publication Paul - This months Sound on Sound.

    http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may09/articles/sernr1.htm

The mic shoot out sounds like a great idea. Why don't you also do a pre shoot out to highlight the difference these make? How about the likes of the Porticos, SSLs or the Micos up against some generic sound card pres?

Good Idea - however, as this is an sE thing common mic pres to all mics would be the thing. However Neve Portico are also associated with sE so their Mic Pres will probably be in attendance.
