Car ferry to Scotland

    Hi,

Myself and my husband were thinking of getting away for a few days in July and one of our options was taking the ferry from Belfast to Scotland and driving around for a few days taking in the the sights etc. Has anyone done this before and would have any recommendations on where to go, what to see etc? From what I can gather, we can either take the ferry from Belfast to Stranraer (Stenaline) or from Larne to Cairnryan or Troon (P&O). Which of these options would be better? We will only be going for a few days (5 max) so we don't want to wander too far from any of the ports really. We'd rather not spend the whole trip in the car. Is there stuff to see or do within a day or two's drive from any of the Scottish ports? I've looked at a few maps and the Visit Scotland website but there seems to be so many options, I'm a bit confused as to what is where exactly and near by to the ports!

    Thanks!

tbh.. Take the troon ferry if you can.. Only leaves you 40 mins from Glasgow whereas Stranraer / Cairnryan are a good 1:45-2 hrs hours away.

From Glasgow, you are 45 mins from Edinburgh.. plenty to see there..
From Edinburgh, you can either head towards Stirling and Bannockburn (Think of braveheart. Can visit the Wallace monument, Stirling castle etc..)
or you can head further north towards Inverness (Highlands / Loch Ness)

i'd head up the west coast and then pop over to one of the islands, or head as far as fort william driving through glencoe (great for the passenger as the views are stunning, not so great for the driver as bendy roads and you keep getting distracted by the stunning scenery). i went belfast-stranraer and the high-speed ferry probably saves you the time you'd spend on the slow ferry to troon i think. it's gorgeous up there, enjoy.
