Need to apply for test and renew permit

Spent the last half an hour looking online but can't seem to find the answer I need.

I am looking to renew my learner's permit. This will be my fourth one, just got the first one at 17 for ID, second one when I finally got a car, went off travelling and renewed it last year despite not having a car - I do now so I now need to get back in to the swing of things. I am intending to get lessons and apply for my test asap. My problem is a) I can't apply for the test online without having a valid learner's permit (it's out of date by a month and a half) but I can't apply to renew my learner's permit without a letter to say I have applied for the test....like I said, on the RSA site they won't let me apply for the test so how do I go about getting a letter of application for the test in order to renew my learner's permit? If anyone could help I'd appreciate it, thanks!

Thank you, I see other people have had the same problem so I might do it by post instead.

I'm having the same problem, my licence expired in December.

And just after learning of the fee increase too! So this is the type of system we're paying for?

I've emailed them and will post their response....

Does anyone know if the "Diver number" changes when you renew a licence? If not it may be alright to run with the old number.

Ah I just realised that signing in cross-checks you with their database. And as my licence expired last December, my driver number is gone off their system.

I asked in the County Council though and they say to apply by post, RSA will reply asking for details of licence number, bring that letter into them and get new licence, then send the details of the new licence back. What a mess!

Ok I'm back again....still the same problem trying to apply for my test online and renew my permit. Still says record not found. My last licence expired in March, does that mean it's off the system now like the last chap on here? They won't answer their phone and no reply to the email yet. So how do I apply for my test with no permit and how do I apply for my permit with no letter to say I've applied for the test (because I won't get a new permit otherwise)? Sorry for the confusion, I just can't get my head around it and would appreciate any help, thank you.

Having the same problem here trying to re-apply for a test. I am following the online application link and inputting all the correct details and still getting the 'Record Not Found' error. Not only is there a massive waiting list but it seems their site doesn't work either - what a service & what a country. Only in Ireland would we put up with this. FARCE !

Has anyone else found the solution to this?

I previously applied online at the start of January without any problem although i did have to wait 15 weeks for my test - more outstanding service - since then it seems as if they have 'updated' their site - some job done!

As regards contacting them by email tried that before - sent 4 emails i think and not one reply !

On a related issue - since my last test i've changed address. Do i need to change the address on the license before i sit another test - and if so does anyone know of a drama-free way to do this........fingers crossed....

thanks for any help in advance....

    Yeap here's what I did...

    1. Download and print the Postal application form from here.
    2. Fill in, and post to the given address with a cheque as payment. Leave your driver number blank, I left a small note explaining why.
    3. They'll reply with a letter asking for your driver number.
    4. Take this letter to your local authority and they'll renew your license.
    5. Now you can email your driver number to the email address given in the letter and they'll send you confirmation that you application is complete.
    6. Put on the kettle and have a well earned cup of tea.

    HI Gary,

thanks for the reply - what a messy application process, in fairness !

Did you ever get any joy as to why the online application doesn't work whereas it had previously. Some pack of clowns ! No wonder the waiting time is so long - typical irish system - crazy !

Yeah when they replied to my email they said...
If applying for a third or subsequent licence you will first need to apply for your driving test by post so that we can issue a letter to you that you must submit to the motor tax office for the purpose of renewing a third or subsequent licence. You can download an application form from the website at www.rsa.ie. Once you have received your driver
no you can then apply online.

They don't seem to realise the problem is with expired licences, not just third or subsequent licences.

"They don't seem to realise the problem is with expired licences, not just third or subsequent licences."

Even more confusing is the fact that my license is my 1st and still valid and why at the start of jan i was able to apply online with no problems.

If this new updated site is progress RSA-style it really doesn't say much for a user-friendly, EFFICIENT system.

Doesn't seem like there is an alternative but to apply by post then ???????????

You could always deliver the form by hand to their HQ!

My first learners permit will expire at the end of May 2011- when I apply for my second permit (with proof of having sat and failed the test frown.gif ) will I then be part of the EDT regulations even though I wont be sitting my theory test again etc?? I really didnt think I would because it won't be my first learners permit but now I am not so sure!
Any help on this would be really appreciated !!
