Dean ML hands down! I'm not a metaller at all, I really dislike stuff like Ibanez RGs and the like, but I really really like MLs. Love this one, it oozes a strange sort of class. Like, "I'm going to windmill my hair while playing a ridiculous riff, but I'm going to maintain my utmost composure while doing so" or something :D

That body with single coils and a Jazzmaster vibrato would be so cool

Hmm, thought we were talking about which brand in general? I was going to post up a pic of my own, but I think I've lost all the piccies I had when I got the new PC last year. I'll try to find one online, but if not I might take some new pics later on.

Ah-hah! Found one. Here us Karl's own custom shop BC Rich Stealth:

I like strats and les pauls. They dont have any pointy bits. If you happen to walk into one, you wont die! :).

    *runs* :D.

this thread got ridiculous fast :)

that blue and redish lightning bolt one actually makes me feel a little sick

Your question assumes that there's actually an X shaped guitar that is nice.

I think the question should be more like, "Who has the least awful X shaped guitar?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,044 ✭✭✭Gaspode

I put it to you OP that there is no such thing as a 'nice' x-shaped guitar!
They are not designed with 'niceness' in mind. They are meant to be mean, bold, brash, bad-ass; anything but nice.
    :D

Those thangs are not designed to be nice......
The guitarfather of the x shape might be the Flying V.....now that's a classic.

I suppose the Dean Razorback is the one i would pick.....even doubles up as a bottle opener for the beer bottles.:D

Karl, is that a tri color flag design Andy LaRocque is playing at 2:38 ?!

Sorry I mean in the official video.

    How about this: http://www.mcguitars.net/heretic_standard.html

Looks like it needs to go to the gym and lose some weight. I also nominate this for the 'most ridiculously priced guitar ever' award, at almost €5000. There seems to be a promotion on too - buy now and receive *wait for it* LESSONS backstage at a Manowar show. Riiiight.

I always thought the Explorer was the daddy of the X shape. The dimensions are almost the same really, with the X shape carved in more, take a look at the similarities:

    stealth_hc.jpg

I know they're not to everyone's tastes, but a nice X shape can look great. Keep in mind, the shape of a guitar can have a great influence on how it sounds. Take for example a regular Gibson Flying V, it's got a mahogany body, set neck, fixed bridge and 2 humbuckers, but does it sound like a Les Paul with those same specs? I think the more unusual shapes will always have their place, because they don't sound like the classic Strat or LP.

I personally prefer the destroyer over the explorer. Just my 2c.

This is exactly why i started this thread. I dont see why people have to be so closed minded about the more extreme guitar shapes, I mean christ we all know what a tele, a strat and les paul look like and by saying you love the shape of one is like saying that you are quite contect with oxygen.

I personally think these are very handsome guitars and I have no time for hollow bodies, 'f' holes etc etc.

Thanks karl for the BC Rich, there, i dunno how i forgot them, half of BC's catelog is x shaped ffs

But i have to agree with the dean, I somehow manages to ooze class, must be the more rounded edges. Have to say though the razorback do absolutly nothing for me.

Well, a lot of guitarists are very, very traditionalist in their ways, and many won't consider an amp other than Marshall or Fender, turning their noses up at any new innovation.

I like new and shiny and different things myself. I am, admittedly, a fan of the Parker Fly:

    Parker-Fly-Mojo2.jpg

I also think Steinbergers are cool. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭rcaz

That's because Steinbergers are cool! You can stand on the neck without putting it out of tune!

I don't like those Parker guitars, though...

I like those Dean MLs, and I like Explorers, but I'd feel like a complete tool playing them, since I'm not into metal at all. Actually, a Jazzmaster is shaped a good bit like an inverted Explorer, if you were to sand down the corners

    jazzmaster-lg.jpg

Now give me a sonic blue Explorer with a JM vibrato, that'd be cool :)

I like the more rigid look of the Jackson Warrior and Xiphos better than the Stealth, though there is not much in it. The ML is something I don't like much because I think it's a bit too round like a Gibson V.
I've never played a proper X shape but I hear they balance very well. I'd like to give one a go. After playing plenty of V's I've come to the conclusion that I love the look but I don't like playing them. They don't sit well when I play them, even standing.

I'm all for more interesing shapes as long as there is thought put into the design and not just butchering something for the sake if it.

I've found that with any SG shape I've played...always far too neck heavy.

Personally i love Hetfield's explorers especially the man to wolf inlays man it's just incredible.

Yeah i incompletely agree, Playing one sitting down is a sure way to hurt yourself. I get back pains from them.

    No more V's for me.

As has been said already the ML really is classy somehow, with the right finish, it's the only x-shaped guitar I like. I am partial to explorers though, but only in the classic '58 korina/natural type finish. They are things of beauty.
