On Easter Sunday, Mel Gibson attended Mass at the Roman Catholic church he had built in 2005. His wife wasn't with him. And after the service, he quietly spoke to some parishioners.

"Well," he was overheard saying, "she's filed for divorce."

Last Thursday signed divorce papers seeking joint custody over their minor child, Thomas, 9, and spousal support.

That wasn't the only surprising news. According to a response that Gibson's lawyer filed Monday afternoon, the couple have been officially separated since August 26, 2006, almost a month after Gibson had reached a personal nadir when he was pulled over for a DUI in Malibu.

Robyn's initial divorce petition lists the date of separation as "to be determined."

"They'll do this amicably," a source tells PEOPLE. "There's a lot of mutual respect and they've worked hard on their marriage and worked hard on their separation."

Adds the source, "They'll handle the divorce in the same respectful way."

In fact, Gibson and his estranged wife attended church together with other family members on Palm Sunday, just four days before Robyn signed the divorce papers, PEOPLE has learned.

In addition to Thomas, the Gibsons have six older children: Milo, 19, Louis, 21, William, 24, twins Edward and Christian, 26, and daughter Hannah, 28.

Mel Gibson always had one of the better marriages in Hollywood so this is a shock :eek: and the fact is a catholic i wouldnt think divorce would be option for him.

He must be worth quite a bit so she will do nicely in the divorce

Think he's been on the slide since he got caught DUI and made anti-semitic remarks to the arresting officer.

Awaiting for his divorce to wife Robyn Moore to be finalized, Mel Gibson has made his first public outing with new leading lady, Oksana Grigorieva at the Los Angeles premiere of X Men Origins - Wolverine on Tuesday evening, April 28. The pair was snapped smiling as they hit the red carpet hand in hand.

Citing an unidentified source, Access Hollywood reported that Mel and Oksana have been dating for three years. On the pair's first public appearance at the star-studded event, the source claimed Mel wanted to attend the premiere because he is a friend of the film's producers Richard and Lauren Donner.

Little is known about Oksana's background. She is recognized as a Russian composer-actress and was the partner of former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton. Oksana and Timothy have one son named Alexander. Most recently, it was reported she's been overheard telling friends that she is carrying Mel's baby, a report which is widely believed to have prompted Robyn filing for divorce from Mel earlier this month.

Mel Gibson is expecting a new child with his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, it has been reported.
According to TMZ, Grigorieva is currently in her second trimester.

Despite having a baby together and dating for over a year, the couple have always maintained separate homes, with Mel staying in Malibu and Oksana in a suburb of LA. Mel split from Robyn, the mother of his seven other children, just over a year ago. His rep has not made a comment about the split.
