Rent Allowance Critera

I lost my job and am going to make an application for Rent Allowance but was wondering is there anyone here already claiming it that can answer a few questions for me...

Does it take long to process? And is it back dates from the time you submitted your applications?
How does the benefit come to you? I assume it's not cash? Does it go straight to the landlord?
I was told that the Landlord has to be involved in the application? Is this true? I would have preffered to not get the Landlord involved becasue the original ad for the place I'm renting read; no rent allowances or something like that.

    Thanks

landlord has to accept rent allowance otherwise you cant claim it. One of my mates receives it from local post office every week (cash!) No wonder so many landlords wont accept it. Id say there are times it doesnt get to them.

There are a few hoops to jump through, depending on your situation, but I imagine it is usually sorted in a few weeks. Start now, you may not have the money in a few weeks.

    Normally yes.
How does the benefit come to you? I assume it's not cash?
I get the impression its usually back account or post office payment.
Does it go straight to the landlord?
It depends, but I don't know what those rules are.

They need to fill in some paperwork yes.

Talk to your landlord, explain the situation. Most landlords are human. Explain that rents are falling and vacancies are rising. You are a sitting tenant, you keep the place OK, you don't annoy the neighbours and you pay the rent on time (you do, don't you?). The only problem is if the landlord isn't paying tax. Well maybe its time he started.

Sod the landlord. Sod any form of self doubt you have, this might be the difference between having a roof over your head or not. Go for it.
