    https://www.getaniphone.ie/

Get 20 people to switch to O2 and you can get a prepay iPhone for €5!

Seems legit and has been mentioned on the Talk2O2 Twitter feed also.

*Awaits slew of "I wouldn't buy one even if they were a fiver" comments*

20! jasus, I'd rather buy one it would take a lot less work.

Edit: it says 10 - which is still mad.....that's all their sales people would get in a week and they get paid to do it!

    Edit2: I'm still bemused - that's a sh1te offer.....

I draw your attention to the sticky in the Mobiles/PDA forum that states "IPHONE THREADS ARE NOT TO BE STARTED IN THIS FORUM". :)

    And besides, it's 10 friends, not 20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,312 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

And anyone on O2 who moves 10 friends can get one. You do have 10 friends right?

    Haha this made me laugh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,212 ✭✭✭✭Tom Dunne

    Haha this made me laugh.

I think this is a very impressive marketing move by O2.

What is going to happen is that a person will get at most 3-4 friends to sign up. I'd wager very few people will actually get 10 people to sign up and top up by €20.

So O2 get a load more people signing up but not enough to hand out a load of iPhones at €5 a pop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,312 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

So if you get 10 people to sign up and top up by €20, then you can get an iPhone for €5.

So basically I can buy 10 simcards. Top them up by €20 = €200 + €5 = €205 for a pay as you go iPhone plus I'd have €200 of call credit spread out over 10 sim cards.

    Am I missing something here?

    EDIT:

I just realised they double your initial top up so its actually €400 credit

You do need to enter the names, addresses and dates of birth of 10 people. :)

Good job I have a big family.

Nanny and Grandad, Welcome to O2 :D

Just to confirm things guys that this is a legit offer get ten friends to join O2 and you will get an iPhone for a fiver also anyone you get to join O2 will get a treat card similar to the ones we gave out a christmas time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭philiporeilly

Yeah it does look like you can get an iPhone for €205 all-in if you can get 10 old sims from other networks and 10 free new speakeasy sims to register. The 10 free sims will be harder to find but I have seen them given away for free in colleges and nightclubs for O2 promos. Even if you have to buy the sims (€10 each), it will still cost you only €305, compared to €480 on speakeasy.

If you friends have old sims not being used, there is nothing to stop them to port them and topup for you to avail of the phone. They can bin the sims after you receive the phone as there is no commitment to use the sims.

Or you can use the €400 credit to ring some friends abroad ya otherwise wouldn't. Or even prank a few friends with it. Ya be surprised how long it's take you to use up €400 credit.

Yea I got the text from o2 about it today, how much would it cost if you were to buy the sims and swap them to o2? 200 or 400?

is porting family members against the rules or is it okay?

Should be okay if you can consider family friends :-)

can you just buy 10 tesco sim cards?

    http://shop.tescomobile.ie/shoppingcart/index.aspx

then port all of them and buy credit for each?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,801 ✭✭✭Ah-Watch

Already set the wheels into action myself:rolleyes: Roll on my new iPhone, stupid N95 broken charging socket:mad:

Wonder if the promotion will end once the new iphone is announced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭vinnycoyne

Probably. This could be a way for O2 to get rid of their stock of 3G's before the new model is released.

lol its a waste of money. You gotta buy the sims, buy the credit (20euro each) and then your left with a load of sims needing to be used. Unless you plan on switching sim cards on a regular basis on your phone :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 74 ✭✭pjjk

Just had an idea, after you top up all those sim cards, you could sell them on to friends, or online, and make a tenner on each one.
Also about buying Tesco sims, do they not use the o2 network, which would stop you porting to o2? Just wondered that...

A huge amount of effort. Plus whos going to buy sim cards online when they can get them cheaper/free from the shops.

Em, why not get 10 free sims from O2, top them up by €20, add 10 different names/addresses/dates of birth, then claim your iPhone?

I am sure some headerballs will do it. :)

You get a new iphone for 225euro that you can use with your own o2 sim card. And then you can use the credit on the other 10 sims that were ported to o2. If i'm reading the offer correctly, how is that a waste of money?

What's the situation if somebody was already on o2, let's say my brother is on Meteor with an 086 number, does it count if I get him to move back..

p.s i think o2 sims are free in xtravision, which is beside tesco;)

Anyone pursuing this offer?? How easy is it to change a number to 02? what details do they need??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 878 ✭✭✭Bicky

O2 will validate the number of friends that have ported over to O2. Only when we are completely satisfied that all requirements are properly met will you be eligible for a voucher entitling you to an iPhone for €5.
So does this means you would need ten phones turned on with a sim card in each, waiting for o2 to call to confirm.?
Then you would need to do ten different accents. I can do a good cork accent, but thats about it.

I think it might be something less technical, such as, em, I dunno, seeing if the 10 numbers have topped up by €20? :D

It seems to good to be true. There has to be a catch somewhere. I am intending on getting a bill iphone when the next model is released but i would def get one on this offer until then and give it to my little sis when the new one is released.

Yes port resumes count so if he is coming back to O2 use can use his number if you like

It takes about 5 minutes, get the sim card call O2(between 9 and 6) and say you want to port over to O2. simple as that, they will be on O2 within 2 hours.

    I would take Daryll's word 100% here - I don't see how there could be a catch.

I do, however, think that there will be very few people who will actually get 10 friends/family to sign up and top up by €20.

Maybe Daryll could clarify that. Perhaps my interpretation was wrong, but that promotion's website allows you to order 5 sims.

Also, I'm on meteor with free calls and texts to everyone on Metoer...is there anything stopping me from porting to o2 as one of the 10 numbers, getting the iphone and then moving back again?
Is there a minimum time you must stay with them?

    From the terms:

All 10 friends must have ported to an O2 prepay account from their existing Irish mobile operator by 11.59pm on 15th May 2009. Each friend who has ported over to O2 is required to register on O2.ie and top up their phones by €20 in one payment by 11.59pm on 15th May 2009. Once 10 friends have ported over you can submit a request for a 3G iPhone.

No minimum stay as they are pay as you go. No contract.

This IS a way of O2 getting rid of stock, and a good way too. O2 knows well there will be people buying 10 sims and porting them over but at the end of the day they will be getting €205 for a soon-to-be-obsolete iPhone. Plus they will be getting at least a few people porting over to O2.
Personally I hate O2. Their high charges and low data allowences are horrific. Then they come out with a €40 plan for the iPhone which they try to make out as a great deal but is a brutal deal to get rid of stock. Saying that this is an okay deal. Is it an 8Gb or a 16GB iPhone you get?

It's hardly soon to be obsolete. Especially when it can be upgraded to version 3.0 of the OS.

1Gb is hardly a low data allowance. I have yet to go over my 250Mb a month with Meteor, and I would consider myself a power user.

It is a good way to get rid of the stock before the new model comes out.

True but you would be fairly sickened if you bought an iPhone and in just over a month later a new one comes out

Again true, but they should have unlimited allowence on there highest costing tariff.

For simply getting 10 people to port over to O2. It seems obvious to you and I that this is a clearance method but you'd be surprised how many do not know this.

I doubt people really give a damn that it's clearance. They see it as a cheap way of getting an iPhone.

Ha Ha! I wonder if we could refer each other:D Actually that wouldn't be a bad idea. I have an old O2 sim (still works) and a vodafone sim. If a few of us had an O2 sim and another vodafone, 3 or Meteor sim it could work.
